Final Product

After studying the prices of available manufactured subwoofers and the subwoofers one can build, I came to the conclusion that one can get a much better subwoofer for the money by buying the components and building a box.

After much time studying the information available on the web, I chose an Atlas 15 as the driver. The plate amplifier I chose is the Parts Express 240 watt (300-804).

This web site will document the process and procedures I used to build the box.

I used the 24 inch cube with two 4 inch precision ports design that was suppiled by Chad of Ascendant Audio.

The box I built has a few minor modifications. The design is a downward firing design, I built it as a front firing box. Additional modifications were the addition of a grill, the substitution of a skid plate for the feet, and moving the speaker down by 1/4 inch from the edge of the box to allow for the grill.

Total cost for this project was $501 with the cherry veneer. If a painted downward firing box were built I would estimate the cost to be about $427.

I am pleased with the resulting sound, but am not a true audiophile. I have achieved 114 dB to date with headroom to spare and listened to the BBC Philharmonic on it with good results.
