Final Product

2 1/2 inch egg crate foam was used to line all of the flat surfaces of the interior of the box. I used a spray adhesive and staples. The adhesive did not go very far due to the absorption by both the MDF and the foam.

Make sure that the area where the ports go do not have lots of foam that interfere with the ports or insertion of the ports.

I used cherry veneer on my box. I will not go into all of the details of how to veneer, but will describe what I did.

Since MDF absorbs so much and I have read a lot of people complaining that it absorbed so much contact cement, I first used a sanding sealer to seal the box, and then used a water based high solids contact cement. The choice of cements was not ideal, the water base made the veneer curl, for the wider pieces they curled into a full tube. In addition one piece of veneer contracted after it was on the box and cracked the veneer. I would use the high solvent contact cement in the future on veneers. To some extent the use of water based contact cement was an experiment on my part due to the removal of a lot of oil based products in my state.

Final finishing was four coats of oil based semi gloss varnish using an HVLP sprayer. I used 400 grit sand paper and tack cloth between coats.
