Sacraments

RCIA Is God calling you to become a member of the Catholic Church? The RCIA program is a process for entering the Catholic faith. It begins in the Fall with classes that go until Easter, when people are baptized, confirmed, and receive their First Holy Communion and officially become members of the Catholic Church. Classes meet three times per month, and many common and controversial topics are discussed. Please contact your parish priest for more information on how to become Catholic. Extraordinary circumstances may prevent one from attending classes; therefore, private instruction is also an option.

baptism Those couples wishing to have their child baptized should contact the parish office as soon as possible to make arrangements. Parents are required to attend a class facilitated by Deacon Kevin Downie. After contacting the parish office, a packet will be made available to parents read and fill out before attending the class. Parents can find their packet on the back counter in the Sacristy (next to the gift shop) once they have signed up for a class. (IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY REGISTERED WITH THE PARISH, THERE IS ALSO A FORM TO BE FILLED OUT AND TURNED IN TO DEACON KEVIN ON CLASS NIGHT.) Baptism classes are held the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm in church.

First Reconciliation

Preparation for First Reconciliation is done during the child's second grade year. Faith Formation classes for elementary students are on Wednesday evenings from late September to the end of April from 6:00-7:00 PM in the lower level of the church. Students must complete a workbook at home called "Making Things Right". Students and parents must attend a First Reconciliation Retreat and Luncheon on a Saturday morning a week or so prior to making their First Reconciliation. The First Reconciliation service takes place on a Wednesday evening in church from 6:00-7:00 PM. Specific dates for these events can be found on the Elementary Faith Formation Calendar. Contact Cindy Meyers, the Elementary Faith Formation Coordinator if you have questions or if your child is older than grade 2 and has not yet received the sacrament of First Reconciliation.

First Holy Communion

Preparation for First Holy Communion is done during the child's second grade year following First Reconciliation. Faith Formation classes for elementary students are on Wednesday evenings from late September to the end of April from 6:00-7:00 PM in the lower level of the church. As part of this preparation, Grade 2 students must complete a workbook at home called "Called to His Supper". Students and parents participate in a student/parent Mass, attend Holy Thursday Mass where they participate in the washing of the feet, attend a First Communion Retreat and Practice the weekend prior to their First Communion Mass. The First Communion Mass takes place usually the first weekend in May. Grade 2 students also participate in the Crowning of Mary at Masses the weekend following their First Communion. Specific dates for these events can be found on the Elementary Faith Formation Calendar. Contact Cindy Meyers, the Elementary Faith Formation Coordinator if you have questions or if your child is older than grade 2 and has not yet received the sacrament of First Communion.

Confirmation

Confirmation is a two year program beginning in grade nine. Classes are taught on Wednesday evenings from 7:15 - 8:30 PM from late September to the end of April. The classroom curriculum over the 9th and 10th grade year consists of six modules of learning. Each module is a six week course in the topics necessary for Confirmation preparation. Each module is taught by a different catechist and will be taught three times throughout the year. Grade 9 is divided into three classes that rotate through three modules and grade 10 is divided into three classes that rotate through three different modules. Other activities are included as noted on the Faith Formation Calendar for grades 7-10.

  • Grade 9 & 10 students are required to turn in 12 Sunday Liturgy Notes forms each year
  • Grade 9 & 10 students are required to turn in 6 Confirmation Service Project Reports each year
  • Grade 9 & 10 students are required to attend one NET Confirmation Retreat sometime during their 9th or 10th grade year. These retreats are held at the NET Ministries in West St. Paul and begin at 7:00 PM on Friday evening and end at 2:00 PM Sunday afternoon.

Confirmation is near the end of the grade 10 school year. Click here for more information about the NET Retreats.
Contact Debbie Bauer, the Jr/Sr High Faith Formation Coordinator if you have questions.

Marriage All couples should contact the parish office at least 6 months in advance of their anticipated wedding date. Marriage preparation is offered through the pastor or deacon. Preparation for this sacrament involves about four meetings, along with a required weekend retreat, taking the FOCCUS pre-marriage inventory, and a course on Natural Family Planning (can be done through a home study kit). The meetings with the pastor or deacon will begin approximately six months before your wedding. When you call the parish office, please also let us know whether the two of you are Catholic or not and whether you have been married before. If you have been married before, the prior bond will have to be taken care of before any marriage preparation can begin or before a wedding date can be set. Mixed marriages are usually wedding ceremonies performed by the deacon, and if both of you are Catholic, a priest will perform a wedding Mass (exceptions can be discussed with the pastor or deacon). The required retreat is in accord with Minnesota statutes that permit a discount to be offered for the fees associated with getting a marriage license; the priest or deacon will issue you a notarized statement that you will have to present to the county. Please note that living together before marriage is greatly discouraged, and you will be advised to move apart prior to the marriage (please discuss this with your pastor or deacon). We want your marriage to succeed, and we will give you the tools to help you live a happy, joyful, and successful life together.

Holy Orders Is God calling you to serve Him as a priest or religious priest/brother? Is God calling you to serve Him as a nun? Is God calling you to serve Him as a permanent decacon in the Church? Please contact the parish priest or deacon for more information or for spiritual direction around this matter. You may also want to look at the website for the Vocations Office of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis: www.10000vocations.org.
