Frequently Asked Questions

1) Are your Bots available for download? No, because I enjoy entering them in The ChatterBox Challenge and The Loebner Contest.
2) Are your Bots capable of learning? Yes, but only what I teach them. Learning Bots are a disaster when you have no control of who is doing the teaching. All you are going to get is a Bot that has been taught a bunch of profanities. Talk-Bot is available to the public so anyone can talk to him.
3) Why are your Bots so stupid at times? Compared to what? Compared to other Bots I think they are very competitive. Compared to humans of course they are. There is little comparison between a computer and the complexities of the human mind.
4) What computer language are your Bots written in? Talk-Bot is written in Javascript and PERL. I also have an IRC version of him written in a Mirc. Mirc is a chat client used on IRC.
5) Is programming a Bot hard? It is not so much that the programming is difficult it is the complexities of the human language that is difficult. A person can basically say the same thing a 100 different ways: How are you?, How r you?, How are u?, How r u?, How ya doin?, How's it going? etc. To us the above means pretty much the same thing but to a Bot they are all very different. Take that one example and compound that a thousand times and you start to see how difficult it can become.
6) I am not interested in making another Eliza type Bot with canned phrases. Why can't I make an artificial intelligent robot? I personally don't believe true artificial intelligence is possible nor do I care to spend my lifetime trying to achieve that. Creating Bots is only a hobby for me. A Chatterbot by definition is only mimicing a human and the best Bots at doing that at this point in time are not the so called learning Bots.
7) Which is the best Bot to make a website Bot, downloadable Bot or an IRC Bot? Website Bots are by far the most popular because they are available 24/7 for people to talk to them. IRC Bots can also be connected 24/7 but would have less exposure than a Bot on the Internet. Of course it is possible to make a Bot in all 3 formats but if I had to pick it would be a website Bot.
8) What are your thoughts on the Loebner Contest? I think the Chatterbox Challenge is much more competitive contest because entering the Loebner can be a difficult process. Many talented and creative bot owners will not enter it for that very reason. That is why I started the ChatterBox Challenge where entering would be as easy as possible. Not only will we have all the top Bots from the Loebner entering but also 80+ other Bots participating from all over the world.
9) I've talked to your Bots and I think I can make a much better one. Ok great, by all means go for it and when you're done enter it in The ChatterBox Challenge and we will see. If it is good enough you can even win some money for your efforts.
10) What is the best source for information on Chatterbots? The Chatterbox Challenge at www.chatterboxchallenge.com Not only is it a contest to find the best ChatterBot but it also has a lot of information that I'm sure you will find interesting.
