These year 2012 it is requested that the membership Try to make these 3 Events as a Group and give participation if not 100 %.
The 1st event is New Market one of the oldest continuing yearly Re-enactments. Attending this year will allow the unit if not you the individual a foot in the door for the 150th in 2014 especially if they have a limit to those invited in 2014.
The 2nd event is our own in June at the Canaan Valley State Park. This is the only fund raiser event we have. It is limited to our unit the 1st WV Cav Co "C", a company of the 140th Pa Infantry and the confederate unit The Barbour Greys. We are usually the largest of the 2 union units present, but participation is still small. This is the 149th Anniversary of West Virginia and of the skirmish that took place in Canaan Valley in 1863. Please all members try your best to attend. WE OUR THE HOSTING UNION UNIT.
The 3rd and last is Cedar Creek, in October. The 1st WV Cavalry placed an extreme important part in this Battle. We led the mounted charge that broke the Confederate flank and put them in a run. Again participation as a unit and as well individually puts our foot in the door for 2014 if there are limitations for the 150 which is still expected to be large,
Now for those who are wandering why not Gettysburg? It is a very hot event to do, but it is not a 150th. I will be there in the Living History area doing General Crook. If and only if there is at least 7+ enlisted TROOPERS of the 1st that will be there for the whole weekend. I will done on my Sgt Major's uniform and trudge the heat and go with you on the field for each of the 2 Cavalry Battles.
Respectfully Your Pard & Military Commander Byrdie
