Information Survey Many things have been written about the future of square dancing. The purpose of this survey is to collect information from you and pass it on to the organizations that promote square dancing. Please fill out the information in each section. Then submit the form.
Ballroom dancing has become an olympic sport. This will result in much publicity, sports coverage, television, and increased participation from people who enjoy competitive sports. Many schools and communities place a high priority on competitive activities. For years groups such as the 4-H have put on demonstrations and competitions. Should Western square dancers follow their lead? The clubs would be noncompetitive, as they are now, while dancers organized special teams for competition.
What do you think about competition?
For many people only 3 or 4 hours are available on a week night. When class and club are crowded into this time period class members fail to get dance time because class hours are sacrificed in order to allow time for the club to dance on the same night. This diminishes the fun of the lessons and results in a club full of dancers who don't know the calls and who have to rely on directional calling in order to get through the dance. Some of the best dancers either repeat the lessons, find a place to practice, or learn at a club that has a 3 hour format (review , lesson, and dance time) for the class. The last hour is when dancers have the most fun. With this format two callers and two halls would be needed if class and club are both on the same night. What is the optimal day, hour, and length of a square dance lesson? Will dancers drop out if the location of the class and club dances vary or if the day of the dance is not the same as the day of the lesson?
:Why do some people quit dancing before they have joined a club? Long commitment to lessons Lack of opportunities to practice what was learned Inadequate instruction Failure of club members to accept them quickly into club activities Inconvenient time or location Babysitting not available No time for leisure activities Other reasons

Dancers know that square dancing is fun. How can we communicate this to a wider audience? Some excellent television interviews and films of dancing have been produced. Could dancers, organizations, and businesses join together to let people know how much they are missing when they don't square dance? Who should take the lead?
What needs to be done to interest people in square dancing? There is no need to send your name or address, but space is provided if you wish to do so. Microsoft created this address space as part of the form.
