CONTENT:

  1. Accessing Internet web sites given will assist students understanding of Mexican culture and its art, as well as working along with the social studies teacher.
  2. Designs of piņatas will be sketched first using the knowledge learned from the Internet to contribute to their project.
  3. Using Power Point presentation and a digital camera, students will work in-groups to give a presentation on how to make a piņata then present it to 5th graders.
  4. Accessing the Internet web site on Maria Elena, Students will actively participate in a group discussion on how the elements of art and principles of design are incorporated in to the artists work.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

MATERIALS:

ART TECHNOLOGY

12" Balloons, Paper mache’, Paper, 8 Computers, Internet access,

Clay, Water, Newspapers, Scissors, Microsoft Power Point, floppy disks,

Tissue paper, Glue, Masking Tape, Books, TV/VCR Monitor, Digital Camera.

PROCEDURES:

  1. Do Now (5 min.)
  1. Begin each class with sketching/writing about art. The artwork should be

based on the theme of the unit/lesson.

  1. Demonstration (7min.)
  1. Teacher should give a brief demonstration of the activity for the day, as well as what is to be accomplished for the remanding time in the classroom. Written instructions should be posted for students to easily accomplish the tasks.
  1. Activities (30 min.)
  1. Accessing the Internet in- groups of three, students will research web sites given for additional knowledge on the Mexican culture.

2. The Elements of Art and Principles of Design will assist students in a group

  1. discussion on Maria Elena’s art work.
  2. 3. Sketch designs for the piņata will be completed on newsprint paper.
  3. Students will complete four thumb nail sketches and choose one. Students

    will be sure to incorporate into their designs what they have learned from

    the Internet and the group discussion about the artist Maria Elena

  4. 4. Students will paper mache’ a 12" balloon with newspaper strips. 10-15 layers
  5. will be needed in order to support the three dimensionality of their piņata.
  6. 5. Using clay, cardboard, egg cartons, cardboard tubes, masking tape and paper
  7. mache’ students will begin creating their 3D piņata using the materials
  8. provided.
  9. 6. Students will apply pre-cut tissue paper to their finished piņata. Tissue
  10. paper will be applied with glue beginning at the base of the piņata and
  11. working up-wards.
  12. 7. During the process of creating the piņata students will have selected their
  13. own groups to take digital pictures of the steps taken to completed project.
  14. 8. Groups will access Microsoft Power Point to put together their
  15. presentations, as well as incorporating the digital pictures taken to assist in
  16. the understanding of how to create a piņata.
  17. ASSESSMENT:
  18. 1. Participation in a group discussion on Maria Elena’s art work.
  19. 2. Completion of rubric on the finished art project.
  20. 3. Performance of presentation for the 5th graders on "How to make a Piņata"
  21. 4. Written critical/analysis of students own artwork.
  22. EXTENSIONS:
  23. 1. Recreate a fiesta in Mexico including a feast of foods, music, and the
  24. breaking of a piņata.
  25. 2. Digital photograph taken of art work to incorporate into students personal
  26. art portfolio created in power point.
