CONTENT:

  1. Students accessing the web sites provided will assist in further understanding of the Native American Indian culture.
  2. Student access to an Internet museum site will expand their knowledge of the art created during that time period.
  3. Student will sketched designs first then create a 3D mask using paper mache’.
  4. Incorporation of the elements of art and principles of design will assist students in their creation.

  6. Students will write a short story in English class, and apply it to power point for the audience they are performing for.

MATERIALS:

ART TECHNOLOGY

10" Balloons, Paper mache’, Paper 8 computers, Internet access,

Clay, Water, Newspapers, Scissors Microsoft Power Point, floppy disks,

Paint, Brushes, Masking Tape, Books TV/VCR Monitor, Digital Camera

Smocks, Cardboard, Egg cartons, Pencils

Visuals, Completed example, Written Instructions.

 

 

PROCEDURES:

  1. Do Now (5 min.)
  1. Begin each class with sketching or writing about art. The artwork should be

based on the theme of the unit/lesson.

  1. Demonstration (7min.)
  1. Teacher should give a brief demonstration of the activity for the day, as well as what is to be accomplished for the remanding time in the classroom. Written instructions should be posted for studetns to easily accomplish tasks.
  1. Activities (30min.)
  1. Using the Internet, students should research in groups of four the web sites provided about Native American Indians and their art.
  2. Sketch designs for spirit mask on a piece of newsprint paper. Students should apply the knowledge they learned form the web sites as well as incorporating the Elements of art and Principles of design. Students should develop four facial sketches of animals that best represent them,
  3. and select one.

  4. Students will pair up and paper mache’ a 10" balloon. They will be
  5. responsible for counting the 10-15 layers of newspaper strips required.

    When completed they should cut the balloon in half with scissors.

  6. Using clay, cardboard, egg cartons, masking tape and paper mache’ students should begin creating their 3D spirit mask with the materials provided.
  7. Students will then paint their mask using the warm colors first and cool colors second. Black paint will be used at the end for accenting features.
  8. Upon completion students will write a short story about an important lesson learned in life. Students will access power point to create a presentation about their story. Students will be allowed to include any other skills to enhance their presentation. (Dance, Musical Instruments etc…) Stories will be present to the class/parents for the final activity.

ASSESSMENT

  1. Students should be able to explain how they applied the knowledge learned from the Internet that assisted them in the creation of their spirit mask.
  2. In discussion with the teacher students should be able to explain the elements of art and principles of design they incorporated into their spirit mask.
  3. Written critical/analysis of students own art work.
  4. Completion of rubric on the finished project.

EXTENTIONS

  1. Digital photograph taken of art work to incorporate into students art portfolio
  2. created in power point.

  3. Research on the Internet to enhance knowledge about the uses of masks in other cultures.
