A grandson of Thomas Couch(Laurence Armstrong) in a letter to John A. Brown said that the Couch family came from County Mayo in Ireland, that the Couch family origionaly were from Cornwall, England.The letter goes on to say that the Couch family came to Scone, Ontario, Canada about 1854. A Matthew Couch was mentioned as being an uncle of Thomas Couch, and he settled near Walkerton, Ont.,and was listed as a gardener in the history of Walkerton. There is also mention of a James Couch,who Laurence Armstrong never heard of until in 1975 when he lived near Durham,Ont. when a man and his wife whose name was McCormack from Peterborough,Ont told him that one of them (the McCormacks) was a descendant of James Couch. Matthew Couch was a well known person in this area and wrote some books of poetry. At the time Laurence Armstrong's mother (Maggie, a sister to my grandmother Elsie Couch) was born 16 Jul 1876, Thomas Couch owned three houses in Scone. ![]()
