Zakarias Anderson
![]()
When the Andersons decided to leave Sweden, their son, Zackarias (Zack for short) did not accompany them on the boat to Montreal. Zack was 19 years old in 1901 when the family immigrated, and because money was short, and he was an adventuresome type of person, he signed on with a merchant ship to work his way over to North America. The ship was heading for Galveston, Texas. Approximately 20 miles from shore in the gulf of Mexico, the ship was hit by a severe storm and wrecked at sea. Zack was the only one to reach shore. Apparently he had swum 20 miles and was found exhausted and near death on the beach near Galveston by a person unknown. He was taken to hospital and treated for dehydration. After he regained his strength, Zack went to Georgia and then to Saskatchewan, knowing only Swedish. He rejoined his parents at Kinistino, Saskatchewan, probably in 1902. ![]() Zakarias married Karoline Susannah Christianson, daughter of Hilmer Christianson and Gunhilda Helmerson Benson, on 5 Mar 1907 in Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada. (Karoline Susannah Christianson was born on 23 Jun 1889 in Drammen, Norway, died on 5 Oct 1964 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada and was buried in Saskatchewan, Canada.) |
