She fell down the stairs in Kinistino when she was three years old and permanently damaged her hearing. However, she reacted to loud noises and thumping on the gloor, and she could talk fairly well. She went to deaf school and completed GradeTwelve. In about 1940, she married Tom Crawford who was also deaf. From 1945-6, Emma lived with John and Helen (her sister) Roed in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, and then joined Tom in Brandon, Manitoba, where they continued to reside.
