Black Bears

Size: 4-7 feet long from nose to tail. Breeding age males can weigh between 125- 500 pounds depending on age, season, and food supply. Females can weigh between 90-300 but in captivity adult males and females can greatly exceed these weights.

Color: Usually black or brown ( also called cinnamon), with brown muzzles and brown eyes except at birth they are blue. Sometimes they will have a white patch on chest but this is uncommon in most populations.

Reproduction: The mating season is from late May to July. Bears have a delayed implantation which is in
November they give birth in January or early February their litters can range from 1-6 cubs. When a bear cub is born it will weigh about 1/2 - 1 pound and depending on the food source by fall can weigh 15- 165 pounds

Life Span: 21-33 years

 

African Lions

Size: Males approximately 5-8 feet from head to end of body, the tail is an additional 3 feet. On all four paws they stand about 4 feet at the shoulder. Females are approximately 4-6 feet from head to end of body, the tail an additional 3 feet and stand 3 1/2 at the shoulders. Males can weigh between 3 50-500 pounds. Females between 260-400. In captivity many will exceed these weights..

Color: Tan but males have manes which can range in color from light to dark brown to even black. The mane is to help protect the males neck during fighting and to make him appear larger to competitors.

Reproductions: Females normally give birth every 18-26 months. There is a gestation period of about 100-119 days, she will have 1-6 cubs each weighing about 3 pounds. In captivity a female will give birth more often because the cubs are pulled away.

Life Span: 12- 18 years but in captivity about 20 years

 

Bengal Tigers

Size: Approximately 4 1/2- 9 feet from head to the end of the body, tail is an additional 3-4 feet depending on gender.At the shoulder tigers stand about 3-3 1/2 feet. Males weigh about 400-600 pounds. Females 275-400 pounds but in captivity c~in easily exceed these weights.

Color: Can range from white to light or dark orange almost a rustic color with black stripes.

Reproductions: Tigers have a non-seasonal mating season. Gestation is about 95-112 days. Will give birth to 1-5 cubs which weigh about 2-3 pounds.

Life Span: 15 years but in captivity up to 25 years.
