The FIREWISE COMMUNITY initiative is all about local property owner involvement in achieving and maintaining reduced fire hazard conditions on both developed and undeveloped parcels within the neighborhood. It starts at individual homes and structures and works outwards from there. Guidelines are drawn from State (CalFire) regulations as well as from lessons learned provided by fire service professionals. Above all, this is a self-directed effort reflecting community issues, community desires and community resources.
The process of initially obtaining FIREWISE CERTIFICATION begins with the formation of a committee or Board made up of community volunteers who are willing to devote some time to the effort. An assessment of community conditions then follows, which helps identify both the strong points and the vulnerabilities within the neighborhood. This typically leads to some recommended actions that will reduce fire hazards. A community “Firewise Day” event is scheduled for greater community involvement in the process, and some kind of self-selected improvement project is undertaken (often a volunteer activity). An application for Certification is then submitted to the national Firewise Communities USA organization with CalFire endorsement. Certification lets insurance companies and potential grant sources know that the community takes fire safety seriously and has undertaken steps to reduce local hazards.
