What is Wood Badge?
In 1911, Baden-Powell took the first steps in training Scouting’s adult leaders
by organizing a series of lectures for Scouters. He made great strides in the
years that followed, culminating in 1919 with the establishment of Wood Badge
training. Wood Badge recipients now number more than 100,000 and can be found in
all corners of the world.
Wood Badge training officially began in 1948 in the United States. Since that
time the course has grown and evolved into what many consider to be the peak
leadership development training opportunity for volunteer leaders in the Boy
Scouts of America. It has served as a source of inspiration to thousands of
Scouters, who in turn have affected the lives of millions of the nation’s youth.

What are the Objectives of the Course?
The object of a Wood Badge course is to demonstrate as practically as possible
the aims and methods of Scouting. Covering six days, the course is a
multi-faceted presentation of leadership skills, organizational tools and
team-building activities. In addition, participants will enjoy the fellowship
and camaraderie of learning alongside fellow volunteer and professional Scouters.
With an experienced staff setting the example and interaction with fellow
Scouters, Wood Badge participants will gain a deeper understanding of the values
and methods of Scouting. back to top
How is the Course Structured?
Wood Badge Course C-02-08 will consist of two parts: a practical and an
application phase. The practical phase will be conducted in classroom and
outdoor settings. Leadership skills are learned and practiced in this phase. In
the application phase, each participant will develop personal and Scouting goals
to be accomplished in 18 months following the practical phase. Five central
themes are the focus of both phases:
• Living the Values
• Bring the Vision to Life
• Models of Success
• Tools of the Trade
• Leading to Make a Difference
