A Search for Rexford Falls
And discovery of Sherburne Historic Area
and various outhouses
Sherburne, NY
August 21, 2005

The day started out gray and stormy as a cold front came in bringing in clear, crisp air.
I had read that there was a waterfall in Sherburne named Rexford Falls.  Aha - a new source of adventure.
We drove up hill and down dale, and then came upon the historic district.
There is a one-room schoolhouse, circa 1890, that was used for classes between 1890 and 1947. 
At the top is the cupola holding the bell to summon students to class.
Behind it is the outhouse.
There is also a railroad building moved there.
Tah dah - the historic district.

A bit more driving and we found a creek - but it is in a valley - no falls here.

But we still wanted to find Rexford Falls.
A bit more driving around and we found Rexford Falls Street.
Sounds promising.

Then we saw a bridge.
There are turnstiles at each end.
The floor is plank set on 2x6 joists.
The bridge is metal and looks like it may have been a kit.

That's me on the bridge.  A little scary if you are concerned about heights.

And there is an outhouse.
Two doors and two holes on each side.  Wow, they must have been expecting lots of ....
There is a clean-out door on the side - perhaps it contained a bucket at one time.
We never really got to see the falls.
Perhaps they are under the bridge.
Perhaps this dry summer has limited the water to a trickle that doesn't really count as falls.
Perhaps you really have to hike to see them....
We'll have to go back in the spring.

On the way home, we startled a great blue heron.


And a sheep crossing the road.

Another beautiful day. 
There is lots to do in central New York.
