Balloon Rally at the Spiedie Fest
Binghamton, NY
August 6, 2005

A beautiful morning.
Not that I really thought so when we got up at 5:30 AM to drive to Binghamton for the morning launch of balloons at the Spiedie Fest.
(In case you didn't know it:  Spiedies (pronounced speedys) are bite sized morsels of chicken marinated in oil/vinegar/spices and grilled and placed in a bun.  It's a local treat.)
This year, the Spiedie Fest is in Otsiningo Park, one of the Broome County Parks.  There was free parking at a school a couple of blocks away from the park.   We had enjoyed our coffee on the way there, and snacked from our picnic supplies before trekking to the park.

There were probably around 20 balloons.  They were just being filled with air when we arrived, and it was a wonderful sight to see them lift off into the blue sky with popcorn clouds.   We were fascinated by the shapes that were new to us.
This Alpo can is huge.  You can see the basket just getting ready to do a touch-and-go into the pond.  (I assume it was intentional!)

These critters are cute.

The balloons were inflated in several different fields.  From where I was standing, it was fun to watch them emerge from behind the treeline.  What could this one bee?

The anticipation was fun.
And there were lots of other balloons to watch while we wondered.
The yellow balloons are actually helium balloons tethered at a booth.

Then it became more and more clear.

The website for these balloons is at http://www.thelittlebees.com
We enjoyed the beautiful day.  With little wind, the balloons stayed in sight for a long time.

It was a great morning but it's not over yet....
