Friends of Rice Lake Refuge
Photo Contest Guidelines


Eligibility

The contest is open to the general public and all ages are welcome to participate.



Subject Matter

Photographs must be of nature related subjects in Aitkin County, MN. Each photographer may enter two photographs per category. Eligible categories are: landscape/nature/flowers; owls; wildlife (birds and animals); black & white; people in nature; and digitally manipulated. Photos may be from print, slides, or digital. Any digitally manipulated/enhanced photos entered into general categories will be disqualified.



Format

Photographs must be 5x7, 8x10, or 8x12 and mounted on either black or white boards with a two inch margin on all sides. No framed artwork will be accepted.



Use of Winning Photos

All entrants must complete, sign, and submit the official entry form. Winning photographs may be used by the Friends of Rice Lake Refuge as postcards and/or for other educational, promotional, informational purposes, on the Friends and/or Refuge website, in printed materials, and on products. Winners will be asked to supply a negative, slide, or digital file. The photographer will be given credit when the photo is used.



Deadline

Entries will be accepted during the month of September. Entries must be dropped off at the Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge located five miles south of McGregor, MN on Highway 65.



Judging

Judging will be conducted by three volunteer individuals. Three winners (first, second and third place) will be selected in each category. Photographs will be judged on technical quality, subject matter appropriateness, ability to be reproduced, and originality/creativity. Judging will occur the first week in October. Judges decision is final.



Photo Display

All entries will be on display at the Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge during the month of October. The Refuge and/or Friends cannot be held responsible for loss or damage to photos. Photos must be picked up at the Refuge Headquarters. Photos may be picked up after November 1st. Photos must be picked up before the first of the year.



Entry Fee

There will be a $5.00 per person entry fee with a maximum of 12 photos entered per person (two per category).



Prizes

Each first place winner will receive a $20 gift certificate to the Friends of Rice Lake Refuge gift shop. Second and third place winners will receive a Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge pin. All winners will also receive a ribbon.
