Twenty-six talented piano students performed for family members and friends at the annual Spring Piano Recital on June 7, 2004. The recital was held in the Cashman Conference Center at the WITC campus in New Richmond. Composers represented this year included Grieg, Brahms, Debussy, and Chopin. After the presentation of awards, we had a chance to visit and enjoy refreshments with many parents, grandparents and relieved students.

The background music is Wedding-day at Troldhaugen, Op. 65, No. 6 by Edvard Grieg. This piece was sequenced as a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) file by Bernd Krueger, who has published many more excellent midi renditions on the Classical Piano Midi Page.

There are thousands of sites with MIDI music files on the web. MIDI files are tiny compared to MP3 files so you can download them even if you have a slow Internet connection. The Lutheran Hymnal site has 5 complete hymnals on line with music in MP3 and MIDI formats. They also have the words to the hymns and carols. You will find it here. The Diocese of St. George's, Newfoundland maintains a site with hundreds of MIDI files from the Catholic Book of Worship here. TheUnited Methodist Hymnal on Line is here. Here is a marvelous folk music site created and maintained by Lesley Nelson-Burns. In addition to the midi files, Lesley provides the lyrics and includes links to historical and literary material relating to the songs.

The dominant site for downloading high quality music files on the web is the iTunes Music store. You access this store on line with the iTunes program, which is free for both Macintosh and Windows computers from Apple Computer. You will find thousands of classical music files, most available for 99 cents each, along with hundreds of thousands of pop, folk, country and jazz files. There is an excellent search feature, which is how I found my very own copy of "Lime Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise" and Louis Armstrong's version of "Rock My Soul."
