The Cross Story

The Crucifixion and Resurrection From the Dead
of Jesus The Christ, the Son of God

(A Blending from the Four Gospel Accounts)

Forward

My purpose in this "blending" from the four Gospel accounts was to provide for myself, and other folks, a single easy to follow, easy to read, and complete account of all that is recorded in the Gospels concerning the last few days of the life, death, and resurrection of our precious Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ.

Following this blending, or harmony, of the four Gospel accounts: Matthew's, Mark's, Luke's, and John's, I have listed Messianic prophecies quoted from the Bible's prophets of Israel, which are clearly fufilled in the person of Christ Jesus the Messiah, in regards to His death and resurrection.

Paul, the Apostle, wrote to the Christians at Corinth, "We preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block, and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God." (1Corinthians 1:23-24)

For those who are not followers of Jesus, this blended account will give you a clear understanding of what the New Testament (of the Christian Bible) says concerning the death and resurrection of Jesus; and an understanding of what your Christian neighbors believe, or should believe.

My hope and my prayer is that all who read this will find that Jesus truly is "the power of God and the wisdom of God" always and forever!

May God Bless you,

Sincerely in Christ,   Brother Jim

The Crucifixion and Resurrection From the Dead
of Jesus The Christ, the Son of God

Jesus Predicts His Crucifixion
(Matthew 26:1-2; Mark 14:1; Luke 22:1)

And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, that He said to His disciples, "You know that after two days is the feast of the passover and the unleavened bread; and then the Son of Man shall be betrayed and crucified.

The Chief Priests and Elders Plot to Kill Jesus
(Matthew 26:3-5; Mark 14:1-2; Luke 22:2)

Then there assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, into the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas. And they consulted on how they might take Jesus by cunning, and kill Him. But they said, "Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people;" for they feared the people.

Judas Bargains with the Chief Priests to Betray Jesus
(Matthew 26:14-16; Mark 14:10-11; Luke 22:3-6)

Then satan entered into Judas who, was called Iscariot, who was numbered with the twelve. And he went away and communicated with the chief priests, and captains, on how he might deliver Jesus unto them. And he said to them, "What will you give me, and I will deliver Him unto you?" And when they heard this they were glad; and they made an agreement with him for thirty pieces of silver; and he agreed. And from that time onward Judas sought for an opportunity on how he might conveniently deliver Jesus unto them in the absence of the multitude, and thus betray Jesus.

Preparations for the Passover Meal are Made
(Matthew 26:17-19; Mark 14:12-16; Luke 22:7-13)

And when the first day of unleavened bread came, when they killed the sacrifice of the passover, the disciples of Jesus came to Him and said to Him, "Where do you want us to go and make preparation so that you may eat the passover?" And He sent forth two of His disciples, Peter and John, and said to them, "Go and make ready for us the passover, so that we may eat of it." And they said to Him, "Where do You want us to make it ready?" And He said to them, "Behold, go into the city, and when you have entered you shall meet a man carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house to where he goes."

And wherever he shall go in, say to the master of that house, "The Teacher says to you, "My time is at hand, where in your house is My guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with My disciples?" And he will show you a large upper room furnished and prepared; make things ready for us there." And His disciples went forth, and came into the city as Jesus had instructed them, and found it just as He had said to them; and they made things ready for the passover.

The Passover Meal Begins
(Matthew 26:20; Mark 14:17; Luke 22:14-18)

And when it was evening, when the Lord's hour had come, Jesus sat down at the table; and the twelve apostles sat with Him. And He said unto them, "I have desired with a great desire to eat this passover with you before I suffer: For I say unto you, I will not eat of this any more until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God." And Jesus took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves; for I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come."

The Disciples Argue About Who Is The Greatest
( Luke 22:24-30)

And there was also a dispute among the disciples as to which of them should be considered the greatest. And Jesus said unto them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But you shall not be so; but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the youngest; and he that is chief, as he that serves."

"For who is greater, he that sits at the meal, or he that serves?  Is it not he that sits at the meal?  But I am among you as he that serves. You are those who have continued with me in My temptations. And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as My Father has appointed unto Me, so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Jesus Washes The Disciples Feet
(John 13:1-20)

Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that His hour was come, and that He should depart out of this world unto the Father, and having loved His own who were in the world,  He loved them unto the end. And when supper was ended, and when the devil had now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him; then Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God, and was going to God, He rose from supper, and laid aside His garments; and He took a towel, and girded Himself. After that He poured water into a bowl and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel that He was girded with. When He came to Simon Peter, Peter said unto Him, "Lord, shall You wash my feet?" But Jesus answered and said unto him, "What I do you do not know now, but shall know know afterwards. And Peter said unto Jesus, "You shall never wash my feet." But Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, then you have no part with Me." And Simon Peter said unto Him, "Lord, not my feet only, but wash also my hands and my head also!" Jesus said to him, "He who is washed does not need to wash anything but his feet, but every bit of him is clean: and you are clean, and yet, you are not all clean;" For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, "You are not all clean."

So after He had washed their feet, and had put on His garments, and had sat down again, He said unto them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Master and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, has washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do to others as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord; neither is he who is sent greater than he that sent him. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. I do not speak of you all; for I know whom I have chosen; but in order that the scripture may be fulfilled, he that eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me. Now I have told you before it come to pass, so that, when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am. Truly, truly, I say unto you, He who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him that sent Me.

Judas Leaves After Jesus Identifies Him as The Betrayer
(Matthew 26:21-25; Mark 14:18-21; Luke 22:21-23; John 13:21-35)

When Jesus had finished saying these things, and as they sat and were eating, He became troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, "Truly, truly, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray Me; even he that eats with Me, for the hand of him that betrays Me is with Me on the table."  And they began to be exceedingly sorrowful, and to say unto Him, every one, one by one, "Is it I?" Then the disciples looked at one another, doubting of whom he spoke. And they began to question among themselves, which it was that should do this thing. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it was of whom He spoke.  Then he who was lying on Jesus' bosom said unto Him, "Lord, who is it?"  And Jesus answered, "It is one of the twelve; it is he that dips his hand with me in the dish, and to whom I shall give a portion after I have dipped it. This one shall betray Me.

The Son of man indeed shall go as it has been determined for Him, and as it is written of Him; but woe unto that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born."  Then Judas, who betrayed Him, answered and said,  "Master, is it I?" And Jesus said unto Judas, "You have said it." And when Jesus had dipped the portion, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. And after giving the dipped portion, satan entered into Judas. Then Jesus said unto Judas, "What you do, do quickly."

Now no man at the table knew why Jesus spoke this way unto Judas. For some of them thought, because Judas had the money bag, that Jesus had said unto him, "Buy those things that we have need of against the feast;" or, that he should give something to the poor.

Judas then having received the dipped portion went immediately out: and it was nighttime.

Then after Judas had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. If God be glorified in Him, God shall also glorify Him in Himself, and shall glorify Him without delay. Little children, I am with you for just a little while longer.  You shall seek Me; but as I said unto the Jews, Where I go, you cannot come. So now I say this to you, "A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another, just as I have loved you, so you also should love one another. By this shall all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

Jesus Institutes the Lord's Supper
(Matthew26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:19-20)

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, giving thanks, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take you and eat; this is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me." And He took the cup in like manner after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "All of you drink of it;" and they all drank of it. And Jesus said unto them, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But truly I say unto you, from this time onward I will not drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it in newness with you in My Father's kingdom.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial and The Fleeing of the Other Disciples
(Matthew 26:31-35; Mark 14:27-31; Luke 22:31-38; John 13:36-38)

Then Simon Peter said unto Jesus, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus answered Peter, saying, "Where I am going, you can not follow Me now; but you shall follow Me afterwards." And Peter said unto Him, "Lord, why can not I follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your benefit." Then Jesus said unto them, "All of you shall fall away because of Me this very night: for it is written, "I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad." But after I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee." But Peter answered and said unto Jesus, "Though all men shall fall away because of You, I will never fall away." And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon, behold, satan desires to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned back to Me, strengthen your brethren." And Peter said unto Him, "Lord, I am ready to go with You, both into prison, and to death." But Jesus said unto him, "Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say unto you, that this day, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you shall deny knowing Me three times." But Peter said unto Jesus with extreme passion, "Though I should die with You, I will not deny You." And all the disciples said the same thing. And Jesus said unto them, "When I sent you without purse, and money, and shoes, did you lack any thing?" And they said, "We lacked nothing."

Then Jesus said unto them, "But now, he who has a purse, let him take it, and likewise his money; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. For I say unto you, that this which is written must yet be accomplished in Me, "And He was reckoned among the transgressors;" for the things concerning Me have an end." And they said, "Lord, behold, here are two swords." And He said unto them, "It is enough."

Jesus' Final Discussions with His Disciples
(John 14:1-31)

And Jesus said to His disciples, "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself, so that where I am, there you may also be. And where I go you know, and the way you know."

But Thomas said to Jesus, "Lord, we do not know where You are going; and how can we know the way?" And Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man comes unto the Father, but by Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him, and have seen Him."

But Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient us." And Jesus said to him, "Have I been so long time with you, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He that has seen Me has seen the Father; and how is it that you say, "Show us the Father?" Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of Myself, but the Father that dwells in Me, He does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me; or else believe Me for the very works' sake. Truly, truly, I say unto you, He who believes on Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto My Father. And whatever you shall ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you shall ask any thing in My name, I will do it. If you love Me, keep My Commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He shall give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him, or know Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you. In a little while the world will see Me no more; but you see Me; and because I live, you shall live also. In that day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. He who has My commandments, and keeps them, it is him who loves Me; and he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him."

top

Then Judas said unto Him, (but not Judas Iscariot), "Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?" And Jesus answered and said to him, " If a man loves Me, he will keep My words; and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him, and make Our dwelling place with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My sayings; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me. These things have I spoken unto you while I am still present with you. But the Helper, who is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you; but not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. You have heard how I said unto you, "I go away, and come again unto you." If you loved Me, you would rejoice, because I said, "I go unto the Father;" for My Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it comes to pass, so that when it is comes to pass, you might believe. After this I will not speek much with you; for the prince of this world is coming, and has nothing in Me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave Me commandment, even so do I. Arise, let us go from here."

Jesus Continues with His Final Discussion
Jesus is the True Vine; Love One Another; The World Will Hate You

(John 15:1-25)

"I am the true vine, and My Father is the husbandman. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He cleans it, so that it may bring forth more fruit. Now you are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except that it abides in the vine; so also, neither can you, except that you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, this same one brings forth much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If a man does not abide in Me, he is cast forth as a branch that is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, then you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you. Here is how My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you shall be My disciples. As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you; and so also you should continue in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; even as I have kept My Father's commandments, and abide in His love."

top

"These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is My commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do what ever I command you. From now on I do not call you servants; for the servant does not know what his lord does; but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of My Father I have made known unto you. You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you, and appointed you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain; so that what ever you shall ask of the Father in My name, He may give it you. These things I command you, that you love one another."

"If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love his own; but because you are not of the world, and because I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said unto you, "The servant is not greater than his Lord." If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept My words, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do unto you for My name's sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. If I had not come and spoken unto them, they would not have sin; but now they have no covering for their sin. He who hates Me hates My Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no other man did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and have hated both Me and My Father. But this comes to pass, so that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, "They hated Me without a cause."

The Holy Spirit Promised; His Death and Resurrection Foretold; Final Exhortations
(John 15:26-27, 16:1-33)

But when the Comforter comes, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He shall testify of Me; and you also shall bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning."

"These things have I spoken unto you, so that you should not be stumbled. They shall cast you out of the synagogues. The time is coming, that whoever kills you will think that he is doing God a service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor Me. But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, you may remember that I told you of them. But I did not say these things to you at the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going My way to Him who sent Me; and yet none of you asks Me, "Where are You going?" But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. Of sin, because they did not believe on Me; of righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you will see Me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged."

"I still have many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now. However when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth; for He shall not speak of himself; but whatever He shall hear, that shall He speak; and He will show you things to come. He shall glorify Me; for He shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore said I, that he shall take of Mine, and shall show it unto you."

In a little whilen you shall not see Me; and again, in a little while, you shall see Me, because I go to the Father. Then some of His disciples said among themselves, "What is this that He is saying unto us, "In a little while you shall not see Me; and again, in a little while you shall see Me;" and, "Because I go to the Father?" They said therefore, "What is this that He is saying, "In a little while?" We cannot understand what He is saying."

Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask Him about these sayings, and He said unto them, "Do you inquire among yourselves about what I said, "In a little while you shall not see Me;" and again, "in a little while you shall see Me?" Truly, truly, I say unto you, "That you shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice; and you shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy."

top

"A woman when she is in labor has sorrow, because her hour to give birth has come; but as soon as she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish of the labor, because of her for joy that a child is born into the world. And now you also have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and no man will be able to take your joy from you. And in that day you shall not ask Me anything."

"Truly, truly, I say unto you, Whatever you shall ask of the Father in My name, He will give it you. Before now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask, and you shall receive, that your joy may be full. These things have I spoken to you in proverbs; but the time is coming, when I shall no longer speak to you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly of the Father. In that day you shall ask in My name; but I am not saying to you, that I will pray to the Father for you; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came out from God. I came forth from the Father, and have come into the world; and now, I leave the world, and return to the Father."

Then His disciples said unto Jesus, "Lo, now You are speaking plainly, and are not speaking in proverbs. Now are we sure that You know all things, and do not need that any man should ask of You; by this we believe that You came forth from God." Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? Behold, the hour is coming, and has even now come, that you shall be scattered, every man to his own place, and shall leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

Jesus' Intercessory Prayer
(John 17:1-26)

These words Jesus spoke; and then He lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, so that your Son also may glorify You; as You have given Him power over all flesh, so that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given to Him. And this is life eternal, that they might know You the only true God, and Jesus the Christ, whom You have sent."

"I have glorified You on the earth; I have finished the work which You gave Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me with Your own self, with the glory which I had with You before the world was created. I have manifested Your name unto the men who You gave to Me out of the world. They were Yours, and You gave them to Me; and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things whatever You have given Me are of You. For I have given unto them the words which You gave Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from You, and they have believed that You did send Me. I pray for them, I pray not for the world, but for them who You have given to Me; for they are Yours. And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your own name those whom You have given Me, so that they may be one, as We are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name; those who You gave Me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; so that the scripture might be fulfilled. And now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have My joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through Your truth. Your Word is truth. As You have sent Me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also who shall believe on Me through their word; that they all may be one; as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe that You have sent Me. And the glory which You gave me I have given them; that they may be one, even as We are one; I in them, and You in Me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them, as You have loved me."

"Father, I will that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am; that they may behold My glory, which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world has not known You; but I have known You, and these have known that You have sent Me. And I have declared unto them Your name, and will declare it; that the love which You have loved Me may be in them, and I in them."

Jesus Agonizes in the Garden concerning His Upcoming Trial and Crucifixion
(Matthew 26:30,36-46; Mark 14:26,32-42; Luke 22:39-46; John 18:1)

And when Jesus had spoken these words, and when they had sung a hymn, He went forth with His disciples, as was His custom, over the brook Kidron, into the Mount of Olives, where there was a garden, a place called Gethsemane, into which He entered, Himself and His disciples.

And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; for Jesus oftentimes went there with His disciples.

And when He was at the place He said unto the disciples, "Sit you here, while I go and pray yonder; and pray that you enter not into temptation." And He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, James and John, and He began to be greatly amazed and sorrowful, and very heavily troubled.

Then Jesus said unto them, "My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death; tarry you here, and watch with Me." And He went a little farther from them, about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and fell on His face on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, that the hour might pass away from Him, saying, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You; if it be possible, and You are willing, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless not as I will, but as You will be done." And there appeared an angel unto Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly; and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when He rose up from His prayer He came unto the disciples, and found them asleep from sorrow, and Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Why do you sleep! What, could you not watch with Me one hour? Arise, and watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Then Jesus went away again the second time, and prayed, saying the same words, "O My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me, except I drink it, then Your will be done." And He came and found them asleep again; for their eyes were very heavy. And they knew not how to answer Him. And He left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

Then Jesus came to His disciples, and said unto them, "Sleep on now, and take your rest; it is enough; behold, the hour is at hand, and behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; behold, he who betrays Me is at hand."

Jesus is Betrayed and Arrested
(Matthew 26:47-56; Mark 14:43-52; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:3-12)

And straightway, while Jesus was still speaking, behold, a great multitude was coming from the chief priests, and the scribes and Pharisees, and the elders of the people, with swords and staves.

Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came to the place with lanterns and torches and weapons. Now he who betrayed Jesus had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I shall kiss, that is Him; take Him, and lead Him away safely."

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon Him, went forward, and said unto them, "Who do you seek?" They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." And Jesus said unto them, "I am he." And Judas also, who betrayed Him, stood with them. As soon then as Jesus had said unto them, "I am He", they moved backward, and fell to the ground.

Then Jesus asked them again, "Who do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." And Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am He; if therefore you seek Me, let these go their way;" so that the saying might be fulfilled, which He spoke, "Of them which You gave me have I lost none."

And he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and immediately drew near unto Jesus to kiss him, and said, "Hail, Rabbi," and he kissed Him. But Jesus said unto him, "Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss? Friend is that your purpose for coming?"

Then they came and laid hands on Jesus, and took Him.

When the disciples who were about Jesus saw what was going to happen, they said unto Him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" And behold, a certain one of them that stood by with Jesus, Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and stretched out his hand, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. Now the servant's name was Malchus. And Jesus answered and said unto Peter, "Draw back for now, and put your sword into the sheath; for all those that take up the sword shall perish with the sword. Do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He shall presently give Me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? The cup which My Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?" And He touched his ear, and healed him.

Then in that same hour Jesus answered and said to the multitudes, to the chief priests, and captains of the Temple, and the elders, which had came out against Him, "Have you come out, as against a thief, with swords and staffs to seize Me? When I was with you daily in the Temple, you stretched forward no hands against Me, and laid no hold on Me, and took Me not; but this is your hour, and the power of darkness!" But all this was done, so that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook Him, and fled.

But there followed Jesus a certain young man, having a linen cloth wrapped about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him; And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

Jesus is Tried Before the Jewish Authorities
(Matthew 26:57-68; Mark 14:53-64; Luke 22:54-71; John 18:13-27)

Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound Him, And led Him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest that same year. Now Caiaphas was he, who gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples, and about His doctrine. Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue, and in the Temple, where the Jews always gather; and in secret have I said nothing. Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me, as to what I have said unto them; behold, they know what I said." And when He had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood nearby struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest like that?" "Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?"

Then Annas sent Jesus bound to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where all the chief priests, and the scribes and the elders were gathered together. And Simon Peter had followed Jesus from afar off, into the court of the high priest; and so did another disciple; and that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke unto her that kept the door, and brought Peter inside; and he sat with the officers to see the end. And the servants and officers stood there, and they had made a fire of coals; for it was cold; and they warmed themselves; and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself in the light of the fire.

And as Peter was below, sitting in the court, there came unto him one of the maids of the high priest, the same maid that kept the door; and seeing Peter warming himself in the light of the fire, she said, "You were also with the Nazarene, Jesus the Galilean. Are you also one of this man's disciples?" And Peter said, "I am not!" And she looked at him steadfastly, and said, This man was also with Him. But he denied before them all, saying, "Woman, I neither know, nor understand what you are talking about; I do not know Him! And Peter went out unto the porch; and the cock crew.

And after a little while the maid saw Peter again, and said to those standing about, "This man was also with Jesus of Nazareth!" and another said, "You are one of them!" But he again denied it with an oath, saying, "Man, I am not! I do not know this Man! And after the space of about one hour, another one of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with Him? Of a truth you are one of them; for your speech makes you known!" And he confidently affirmed, saying, "Of a truth this man was with Him; for he is a Galilean." Peter therefore denied again; and he begin to curse and and to swear, "I know not this Man of whom you speak, I do not know what you are saying." And immediately, while he was still speaking, the cock crew the second time!

And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how Jesus had said unto him, Before the cock crows twice, you shall deny Me three times. And when he had thought about this, Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

And the men that held Jesus mocked Him, and struck Him. And some began to spit on Him, in the face; And when they had blindfolded Him, by covering His face, the officers struck Him on the face with the palms of their hands, and asked Him, saying, "Prophesy unto us you Christ, who is it that struck You?" And many other things they spoke against Him, reviling Him.

And as soon as it was daytime, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and they led Jesus into their council. And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put Him to death; and they found none. For many bore false witness against Him, and their witness did not agreed with one another. And there arose certain witnesses who bore false witness against Him, saying, "We heard Him say, "I will destroy this Temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands."" But these witness did not agree with each other either.

And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, "Do You answer nothing? what about what these witness are saying against You?" But Jesus held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, and said unto Him, saying, "I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God the Blessed? tell us." And Jesus said unto them, "If I tell you, you will not believe; and if I also ask you, you will not answer Me, nor let Me go. Never-the-less, I say unto you, After this you shall see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the Power of God, and coming with the clouds of heaven."

Then they all said, "Are You then the Son of God?" And He said unto them, "You say that I am." And they said, "What need we any further witness? For we ourselves have heard from His own mouth." Then the high priest tore his clothes, and said, "He has spoken blasphemy; what need we any further witnesses? Behold now, you have heard the blasphemy from His own mouth; what do you think? And they all condemned Him and answered and said. "He is guilty and worthy of death."

Jesus is Tried Before Pilate
(Matthew 27:1-2, 11-14; Mark 15:1-5; Luke 23:1-5; John 18:28-38)

And as soon as morning came, all the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they took counsel against Jesus to put Him to death; and they bound Jesus, and carried Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate. Then the whole multitude arose and they led Jesus away from Caiaphas to the Hall of Judgment, the Roman Praetorian. And it was early; but so that they might eat the passover they themselves did not go into the Judgment Hall, lest they should be defiled.

Therefore, Pilate went out to them, and said, "What accusation are you bringing against this Man?" And they answered and said unto him, "If He were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered Him up to you." And they began to accuse Jesus, saying, "We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ a King." Then Pilate said to them, "Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law." The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death." This was spoken so that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He spoke, signifying what kind of death He should die.

Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called for Jesus. And Jesus stood before Pilate, the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And Jesus answered him, "Do you say this thing of yourself, or did others tell you it about Me?"

Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You unto me; what have You done?" Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world; if My kingdom were of this world, then would My servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here." Pilate therefore said unto him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears My voice. And Pilate said unto Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and said unto them, I find no fault in Him at all. And when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, Jesus answered nothing. Then Pilate said unto Him, "Do You not Hear how many things they witness against You? And He answered him to not a word; inasmuch that the governor marveled greatly.

Then Pilate said to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this Man. But they were even more fierce, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all the Jewish people, beginning from Galilee to this place." When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilean. And when he knew that Jesus belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

Jesus Goes Before Herod
(Luke 23:6-12)

And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad; for he had been desiring to see Him for a long season, because he had heard many things about Him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by Jesus. Then he questioned Him with many words; but He answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. And Herod with his men of war considered Him as nothing, and mocked Him, and arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back again to Pilate. And that same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together; for before they were at enmity with each other.

Jesus Goes Before Pilate Again
(Matthew 27:15-30; Mark 15:6-19; Luke 23:13-25; John 18:39-19:16)

And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, Said unto them, "You have brought this Man unto me, as one who perverts the people; and, behold, I, having examined Him before you, have found no fault in this Man touching those things which you accuse Him; no, nor even Herod; for he sent Him back to us; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is deserving unto Him. I will therefore chastise Him, and release Him."

Now at that feast the governor was willing to release unto the people one prisoner, whomever they would ask of him. Now there was another notable prisoner, a robber, one named Barabbas, who lay bound with those who had made insurrection with him in the city, and who had committed murder in the insurrection; and they had been cast into prison. Therefore when the multitude went up, and were gathered together, to ask Pilate to do as he was willing to do unto them; Pilate said unto them, "You have the custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover; Whom do you will that I release unto you? Barabbas, or the King of the Jews, Jesus who is called Christ?" For he perceived and knew that for envy the chief priests had delivered Him up.

Also, when Pilate had sat down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, "You should have nothing to do with that just Man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of Him."

But the chief priests and elders stirred up and persuaded the multitude that they should ask for Barabbas to be released unto them, and to destroy Jesus. The governor answered and said unto them, "Who of the two do you desire that I release unto you?" And they cried out all together saying, "Not this Man! Away with Him! Release unto us Barabbas!" Pilate again answered and said unto them, "What shall I do then with Jesus who is called Christ, whom you call King of the Jews?" But they all cried out again, shouting unto him, "Crucify, Crucify Him, Let Him be crucified." And the governor said, "Why, what evil has he done? I have found no cause for death in Him; I will therefore chastise Him and release Him." But they cried out even more exceedingly , saying, "Let Him be crucified." And their voices prevailed!

When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was being made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person; see to it yourselves. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. And Pilate, wishing to calm the multitude, gave sentence that what they asked for should be done.

Then he released Barabbas unto them; he who for insurrection and murder had been cast into prison, whom they had asked for. And when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to their will, to be crucified.

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Preatortium, and gathered unto Him the whole band of soldiers. And they stripped Him, and put on Him a purple robe. And when they had woven a crown of thorns, they put it upon His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they bowed the knee before Him to worship Him, so as to mock Him, and begin to salute Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they spit upon Him, and took the reed, and smote Him on the head, and struck Him with their hands. Pilate therefore went forth again, and said unto the people, "Behold, I bring Him forward before you, so that you may know that I find no fault in Him." Then Jesus came forward, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate said unto them, "Behold the man!"

When the chief priests therefore and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify Him, crucify Him." But Pilate said unto them, "Take Him yourselves, and crucify Him: for I find no fault in Him.

The Jews answered Pilate, "We have a law, and by our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God." When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was even more afraid.

And he went again into the judgment hall, and said unto Jesus, "Where are You from?" But Jesus gave him no answer. Then Pilate unto said him, "Do You not speak unto me? Do You not know that I have the power to crucify You, and I have the power to release You?" And Jesus answered, "You could not have power at all against Me, except it were given to you from above; therefore he that delivers Me unto you has the greater sin." And after this Pilate sought to release Jesus. But the Jews cried out, saying, "If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar's friend; whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar." When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forward, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour; and he said unto the Jews, "Behold your King!" But they cried out, "Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him." But Pilate said unto them, "Shall I crucify your King?" However, the chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar." Then Pilate delivered Jesus unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led Him away.

Judas Commits Suicide
(Matthew 27:3-10)

Then Judas, who had betrayed Jesus, when he saw that He was condemned, regretted what he had done, and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Saying, "I have sinned in that I have betrayed innocent blood." And they said, "What is that to us? That is your problem." And he cast down the pieces of silver in the Temple, and departed, and went and hung himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought the potter's field with them , to bury strangers in. Therefore that field has been called, The Field of Blood, to this day. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me."

Jesus is Led Away to be Crucified
(Matthew 27:31-32; Mark 15:20-21; Luke 23:26-32; John 19:17)

And after they had mocked Jesus, they took the purple robe off from Him, and put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him. And He was bearing the cross by Himself; but as they came out, they found someone passing by, a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, who was coming from the country, and who was the father of Alexander and Rufus; they compelled him to bear Jesus' cross, which they laid on him; and he followed after Jesus.

And there followed Him a great company of people, and of women, who also were crying and lamenting for Him. But Jesus turning unto them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, "Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts which never gave suck." Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, "Fall on us;" and to the hills, "Cover us." For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?" And there were also two other criminals led away with Him to be put to death.

The Crucifixion of Jesus the Christ
(Matthew 27:33-56; Mark 15:22-41; Luke 23:33-49; John 19:17b-30)

And they arrived at the place, which is called Golgotha in Hebrew, which means, when interpreted, "The place of the Skull". And they offered Him wine mingled with gall; and when He had tasted it, He would not drink. And it was the third hour.

And there they crucified Jesus, and the criminals, one on the right hand, and the other on the left, and Jesus in the middle. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title was then read by many of the Jews; for the place where Jesus was crucified was near to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Write not, The King of the Jews; but that He said, I am King of the Jews." But Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments, and made four parts, a part for each soldier; and also His coat; now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see whose it shall be;" this fulfilled the scripture, which said, "They parted My garments amongst themselves, and for My coat they cast lots." These things therefore the soldiers did.

Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And the people stood watching. And those who passed by reviled Him, wagging their heads, and saying, "You who destroys the Temple, and builds it again in three days, save Yourself. If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross."

Likewise also, were the chief priests mocking Jesus amongst themselves, with the scribes and elders, saying, "He saved others; but Himself He cannot save. If this is the Christ of God, His Chosen-One, and if He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now, if He will have Him; for He said, "I am the Son of God.""

And the soldiers also mocked Jesus, and came to Him, and offered Him vinegar, and said, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" The thieves also, who were crucified with Him, cast the same reproach in His teeth.

And one of the criminals, who were hanged, railed on Him, saying, "If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us." But then the other answered, and rebuked him, saying, Do you not fear God, seeing that you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong. And he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." And Jesus said unto him, "Truly I say unto you, today you shall be with Me in paradise."

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple standing by, whom He loved, He said unto His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" Then Jesus said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun's light failed. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is, being interpreted, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, "Behold, He is calling Elijah."

After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, and so that the scripture might be fulfilled, He said, "I thirst." Now there was setting nearby a vessel full of vinegar; and straitway one of them ran and filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon a reed, and put it to His mouth to drink. And the rest said, "Let be; and let us see whether Elijah comes to take Him down and save Him." When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, "It is finished." And Jesus, crying again with a loud voice, said, "Father into your hands I commend My Spirit;" and having said this He bowed His head, and yielded up His Spirit.

And, behold, the veil of the Temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks split; and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves after His resurrection, and went into the Holy City, and appeared unto many.

Now when the centurion, who stood near Jesus, and the others who were with him watching Jesus, saw those things that were done, how Jesus gave up His spirit, and saw the earthquake, they feared greatly, and glorified God, saying, "Truly this Man was the Son of God, and certainly He was a righteous man."

And all the people that had come together to that sight, and who beheld the things which happened, struck their breasts, and returned. And all His acquaintances, and many women, that followed Jesus from Galilee, were there seeing these things from afar off. Among these were both Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and Joses; and Salmone, who when Jesus was in Galilee, followed Him and ministered unto Him; and the mother of the Zebedee children; and many other women who came up with Him unto Jerusalem.

The Body of Jesus is Removed from the Cross
(Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:31-42)

And the Jews therefore, because it was the sabbath preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was a high day,) pleaded with Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other, who were crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that He was already dead, they did not brake His legs; but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and immediately there came out blood and water. And he who saw this bares record, and his record is true; and he knows that what he says is true, that you might believe.

For these things were done, so that the scripture should be fulfilled that said, "A bone of Him shall not be broken." And again another scripture said, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced."

And when evening had come, and because it was the Preparation, the day before the sabbath, behold, there came a rich man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, named Joseph. He was a good and righteous man, and a counselor of honorable estate, and he had not consented to their counsel and deed; and who also himself was looking for the Kingdom of God, and was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, this man went to Pilate, and asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him how long Jesus had been dead. And when he knew it of the centurion, he commanded the body to be given to Joseph. Joseph came therefore with a linen cloth; and there also came Nicodemus, who at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pounds in weight. Then Joseph and Nicodemus took the body of Jesus down from the cross, and wrapped it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden was Joseph's' new tomb, which he had carved out of the rock, but where no man had yet been laid. There they laid Jesus, therefore, because it was the day of the Jews' preparation, and the sabbath was drawing near; for the tomb was nearby. And they rolled a great stone against the door of the tomb, and departed. And the women also, who came with Him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the tomb, and how His body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested on the sabbath day according to the commandment.

The Pharisees ask for Watchguards at the Tomb
(Matthew 27:62-66)

Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, (Friday evening after sunset) the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, Saying, "Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while He was yet alive, "After three days I will rise again." Command therefore that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night, and steal Him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead; so the last error shall be worse than the first." Pilate said unto them, "You have watchguards; go your way, and make it as secure as can be." So they went, and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

An Earthquake Occurs, and an Angel Rolls Back the Stone
(Matthew 28:2-4)

And behold, there was a great earthquake; for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. his countenance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow; and for fear of him the guards did shake, and became as dead men.

The Women Visit the Tomb of Jesus
(Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2-4; Luke 24:1-3; John 20:1)

And when the sabbath day was ended, and as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, but while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, the mother of James, and Salome, came to see the tomb, bringing sweet spices, which they had bought and prepared so that they might come and anoint the body of Jesus; and other women came with them. And they said amongst themselves, "Who shall roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?" And they arrived just after the sun had risen. And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away from the tomb; for it was very great.

Mary Magdalene Runs to Tell the Disciples
(John 20:2)

And Mary Magdalene ran, therefore, and came to Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said unto them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we know not where they have laid Him!"

The Other Women Enter the Tomb and Hear from Angles
(Matthew 28:5-7; Mark 16:5-8; Luke 24:4-8)

Meanwhile the other women entered into the tomb and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. But they saw a young man sitting on the right side, arrayed in a white robe; and they were amazed!

And the angel answered and said unto the women, "Fear not, and be not amazed; for I know that you seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, just as He said. Come and behold; see the place where they laid the Lord. Now go quickly, and tell His disciples, and Peter, that He is risen from the dead, and is not here; and behold, He goes before you into Galilee; there you shall see Him, just as He said unto you; lo, I have told you."

And it came to pass, as they were still much confused about this, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments; And they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth; and they said unto them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen; remember how He spoke unto you when He was still in Galilee, Saying, "the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again." And they remembered the words of Jesus, and they departed quickly and fled from the tomb with fear and great joy; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them, and they ran to bring His disciples word. And along the way they said nothing to anyone for they were afraid!

The Guards Return to the City and Give a Report of These Things
(Matthew 28:11-15)

Now as the women were going, behold, some of the watchguard came into the city, and told the chief priests all the things that had happened. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave a large amount of money to the soldiers, Saying, "Say that His disciples came by night, and stole Him away while you slept. And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you." So they took the money, and did as they were told; and this rumor is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

As the Women are Returning to the City Jesus Appears to Them
(Matthew 28:9-10; Luke 24:9-11)

And as the women went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, and said, "All hail." And they came and held Him by the feet, and worshipped Him. Then Jesus said unto them, "Do not be afraid; go tell My brethren that they should go into Galilee, and there shall they see Me." And they returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven apostles, and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women who were with them, who told these things unto the apostles. And the women's words seemed to the others as idle tales, and they did not believed them.

Peter and John Visit the Tomb
(Luke 24:12; John 20:3-10)

Peter therefore arose and went forth, and also that other disciple, and they went toward the tomb, running both together; and the other disciple outran Peter, and came first to the tomb. And he stooped down, and looked in, and saw the linen clothes lying by themselves; but he did not go in yet. Then Simon Peter who was following him came, and he went into the tomb, and saw where the linen clothes lie, and the cloth, that had been wrapped about the head of Jesus, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. Then that other disciple, who came first to the tomb, went in also, and he saw, and believed. For as yet they did not know the scripture, that Jesus must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again unto their own dwelling, wondering as to what was going to come to pass.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
(Mark 16:9-11; John 20:11-18)

Now when Jesus was risen early on the first day of the week, He appeared next to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. But Mary stood just outside the tomb weeping; and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white sitting, the one angel at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" And Mary said unto them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him." And when she had said this, she turned herself back and away from the tomb; and she saw Jesus standing nearby; but she did not know that it was Jesus. And Jesus said unto her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you seeking?" And Mary, thinking that He was the gardener, said unto Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him from here, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away." Then Jesus said unto her, "Mary." And she turned herself, and said unto Him, "Rabbi" - which is to say, Master. And Jesus said to her, "Do not touch Me; for I am not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto My Father, and your Father; and to My God, and your God."

Then Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that had been with Jesus, as they mourned and wept, that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things unto her. And they, when they heard that Jesus was alive, and had been seen by her, they still disbelieved!

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples on the Road to Emaus
(Mark 16:12-13; Luke 24:13-35)

And behold, after these things, on the very same day, Jesus was manifested in another form to two disciples as they walked on their way into the country, to a village called Emaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

And it came to pass, that, while they talked and reasoned together, that Jesus Himself drew near to them, and walked along with them. But their eyes were shielded from recognizing Him. And Jesus said unto them, "What manner of conversation is this that you are having with one another, as you walk; and why are you sad?" And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered and said unto Him, "Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem, and have not known the things which have come to pass there in these days?" And He said unto them, "What things?" And they said unto Him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him up to be condemned to death, and have crucified Him. But we trusted that it was He who should have redeemed Israel; and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. Yes, and certain women also of our company, who went early to the tomb, have astonished us; and when they did not find His body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that He was alive. And certain of them who were with us went to the tomb, and found it even so as the women had said; but they themselves did not see Jesus."

Then Jesus said unto them, "Oh fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken; was it not required that the Christ should have to suffer these things, and to enter into His glory?" And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He explained unto them, using all the scriptures, the things concerning Himself.

And they drew near to the village, where they were going; and Jesus made as though he would have traveled further. But they pleaded with Him, saying, "Abide with us; for it is close to evening, and the day is almost done." And Jesus went in to tarry with them. And it came to pass, as He sat at dinner with them, that He took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave some to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him; and He vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another, "Did not our hearts burn within us, while He talked with us along the road, and while He explained to us the scriptures?"

And they rose up that same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven apostles gathered together, and the others that were with them, saying, "The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon." And they told about the things that happened along the road, and how He revealed Himself to them in the breaking of the bread. But they did not believe them either!

Jesus Finally Appears to the Apostles
(Mark 16:14; Luke 24:36-49; John 20:19-23)

Now on the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, And as the two disciples from Emus were still speaking, Jesus Himself appeared to the eleven apostles as they sat at dinner. And He stood in the midst of them, and said unto them, "Peace be unto you." But they were terrified and afraid, and were thinking that they were seeing a spirit. But Jesus scolded them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe all those who had already seen Him after He had risen. And He said unto them, "Why are you troubled? And why do doubting thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I myself: touch Me, and see; for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have." And when Jesus had thus spoken, He showed them His hands and His feet, and His side. And the disciples, therefore, were glad when they saw the Lord.

And while they still believed not for joy, and wondered, He said to them, "Have you any meat here?" And they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish, and some honeycomb. And He took it, and ate before them.

And Jesus said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning Me." Then He opened their understanding, so that they might understand the scriptures; And He said unto them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day; so that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."

"And you are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you; but wait in the city of Jerusalem, until you be endued with power from on high." Then Jesus said to them again, "Peace be unto you; as My Father has sent Me, even so I send you."

And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said unto them, "Receive you the Holy Spirit; whoever sins you forgive, they are forgiven unto them; and whoever sins you retain, they are retained."

Thomas who was Not There Does Not Believe Until Jesus Appears Again
(John 20:24-29)

But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I shall see in His Hands the wound of the nails, and put my finger into the wound of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe." Now after eight days when again the disciples of Jesus were within, and Thomas was with them; then Jesus came, with the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, "Peace be unto you." Then Jesus said to Thomas, "Stretch out your finger, and behold My hands; and stretch out your hand, and thrust it into My side; and be not faithless, but believing." And Thomas answered and said to Jesus, "My Lord and my God." And Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are they who have not seen, and yet have believed."

Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples in Galilee
(John 21:1-23)

After these things did Jesus manifest himself again to the disciples on the sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself like this; there were together Simon Peter, and Thomas who is called Didymus, and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going away to fish." And they said to Peter, "We will go also with you." Then immediately, they went forth and entered into a boat, and on that night they caught nothing.

And when morning had arrived, Jesus stood at the shore, and yet the disciples did indeed not know that it was Jesus; Jesus, therefore, said to them, Lads, "have you any meat?" They answered Him, "No." And He said to them, "Cast the net at the right side of the boat, and you shall find fish." They cast, therefore, and they were no longer able to draw up the net, because of the multitude of fish.

That disciple, therefore, whom Jesus loved said to Peter, " It is the Lord!" Simon Peter, therefore, when he heard that it was the Lord, put on his outer clothes, for he was naked, and he cast himself into the sea; and the other disciples came by the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but as it were about one hundred yards off, dragging the net of the fishes. When, therefore, they came to the land, they beheld a fire of coals laid out, and a fish lying on it, and bread.

And Jesus said to them, "Bring from the fishes that you have caught now;" Then Simon Peter went up, and drew the net up on the land, full of great fishes, one hundred fifty-three, and though they were so many, the net was not torn. And Jesus said to them, "Come you, and eat." And not one of the disciples ventured to ask of Him, "Who are You?" For they knew that it was the Lord. Jesus, therefore, came and took the bread and gave to them, and the fish in like manner; this was now the third time Jesus appeared to His disciples, since having been raised from the dead.

When, therefore, they had ate, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonas, do you love Me more than these?" And Peter said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I dearly love You;" and Jesus said to him, "Feed My lambs." Then Jesus said to Peter again, a second time, "Simon, son of Jonas, do you love Me?" And Peter said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I dearly love You;" And Jesus said to him, "Tend My sheep." Then Jesus said to Peter a third time, "Simon, son of Jonas, do you dearly love Me?" And Peter was grieved that Jesus said to him a third time, "Do you dearly love me?" And he said to Jesus, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I dearly love You." Then Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. Verily, verily, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked wherever you willed to go; but when you become old, you shall stretch forth your hands, and another will gird you, and shall carry you where you do not will to go." And Jesus said this, signifying by what kind of death Peter would glorify God. And having said this, Jesus said to Peter, "Follow Me."

And Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following; the same disciple who also reclined at the supper on His breast, and had said, "Lord, who is he who is betraying You?"

Peter after seeing this disciple, said to Jesus, "Lord, and what about this one?" And Jesus said to him, "If I will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me." This word, therefore, went forth amongst the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him, that he would not die, but, "If I will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?"

Jesus Appears to the Apostles In Galilee
(Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:15-18)

Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to a mountain where Jesus had appointed for them. And when they saw Him, they worshipped Him; but some disciples still doubted. And Jesus spoke to them, saying, "All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go you therefore into all the world, and preach the Goodnews to the whole creation, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he who does not believe shall be damned."

"And these signs shall follow them that believe; in My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Teach them to observe all the things that I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen."

Jesus Ascends into Heaven
(Mark 16:19; Luke 24:50-52; Acts 1:1-11)

All these things are the records of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which He was taken up into heaven, after He had through the Holy Spirit given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen; to whom also, as mentioned above, He showed Himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, having been seen by them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

So then after the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He led them out until they had arrived near Bethany; and, being assembled together with them, He commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, He had said, "You have heard of Me. For John truly baptized with water; but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." When therefore, they had come together, they asked of Jesus, saying, "Lord, will You at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?" And He said to them, "It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put in His own power. But you shall receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses for Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth.

And when Jesus had spoken these things, and while they watched, He lifted up His hands and blessed them; and it came to pass, while He blessed them He parted from them and was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight; and He was received up into heaven, and sat down on the right hand of God. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white clothing; who also said, "You men of Galilee, why are you standing there staring up into heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, shall come again in the same way as you have seen Him go up into heaven."

And they worshiped Jesus, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the Temple, blessing God.

Jesus said: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son,
so that whoever believes in Him (in Jesus) should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through Him might be saved."

Biblical Messianic Prophecies Fufilled by the Crucifixion and Resurection
of Jesus The Christ, the Son of God

(Pronouns, and names, referring to the Messiah Jesus are underlined. Pronouns, and names, referring to the LORD God are in Bold.)
(Notes are in brackets)

Isaiah 53:1-12

"Who has believed our report? and to whom is the Arm of the LORD revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: He has no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.

Surely He has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth. He is brought as a Lamb to the slaughter, and as a ewe-sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeed not His mouth.

He was taken from prison and from judgment; and who shall declare His generation? for He was cut off out of the land of the living; and for the transgression of My people was He stricken. And He made His grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death; because He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in His mouth.

Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him. He has put Him to grief: when You shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. He shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied. By His knowledge shall My Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He has poured out His soul unto death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."     (Isaiah 53 is perhaps the preeminent prophecy concerning God's promised Messiah Jesus, detailing God's plan for Salvation through the sufferings of Jesus for the forgivenees of our transgressions and iniquities.)

Zechariah 13:6-7

"And one shall say unto Him, 'What are these wounds in Your hands?' Then He shall answer, 'Those with which I was wounded in the house of My friends.' Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, and against the Man who is My Associate, says the LORD of Hosts; Strike the Shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered; and I will turn My hand upon the little ones."     (The LORD of Hosts, God Himself, is the One who says 'Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd', and again, 'Strike the Shepherd' and the sheep will be scattered.)

Zechariah 12:10

"And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications; and they shall look upon Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for Him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.     (This is a post Resurrection prophecy yet to be fufilled during the Day of the Lord, at the Second Coming of Jesus)

Psalm 2:1-2

"Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against His Anointed     (i.e. His anointed and promised Messuah - Jesus),"

Psalm 22:1

"My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"     (a prophetic cry of King David, who is a prophetic 'type' of Jesus the Messiah)

Zechariah 11:12-13

"And I said unto them, If you think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my (Judas) price thirty pieces of silver. And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter; that good price that I was valued by them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD."

Psalm 69:19-21

"You have known My reproach, and My shame, and My dishonor. My adversaries are all before You. Reproach has broken My heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. They gave Me also gall for My meat; and in My thirst they gave Me vinegar to drink."

Psalm 22:7-8

"All those who see Me laugh Me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 'He trusted on the LORD that He would deliver Him: let Him deliver Him, seeing He delighted in Him."

Psalm 22:14-19

"I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; it has melted in the midst of My bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and My tongue cleaves to My jaws; and You have brought Me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed Me; the assembly of the wicked have inclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet. I may tell all My bones: they look and stare upon Me. They part My garments among them, and cast lots upon My coat. But be You not far from Me, O LORD: O My strength, hasten to help Me."

Psalm 16:9-10

"Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. For You wil not leave My soul in hell; neither will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption."     (A prophecy foretelling the physical resurrection from the dead of Jesus)

Psalm 34:19-20

"Many are the afflictions of the Righteous: but the LORD delivers Him out of them all. He keeps all His bones: not one of them is broken."     (see also Exodus 12:46 and Numbers 9:12 where it says that no bone of the passover lamb is to be broken!)
