List of Names & Titles
the FAITHFUL AND TRUE WITNESS
"And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, "The Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the beginning of the creation of God, says this, ..." (Revelation 3:14)
"And from Jesus Christ, who is the Faithful Witness, and the First Begotten of the Dead, and the Prince of the Kings of the Earth. Unto Him who loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood, ..., to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen." (Revelation 1:5-6)
"And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He who sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He does judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a name written, that no man knew but He Himself. And He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood; and His name is called The Word of God." (Revelation 19:11-14)These three similar titles of Jesus, are only found within the the last New Testament book of the Bible: 'The Revelation of Jesus Christ' (also called the Revelation of John, to whom it was revealed, or the Book of Revelation). In the context of this last Book of Revelation, Jesus is the Faithful Witness who is testifying, or Bearing Witness, as to the validity and truthfulness of the end-time prophetic message of the Book of Revelation. Consider these final words of Jesus:
"I Jesus have sent My angel to bear witness unto you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the Bright and Morning Star. And the Spirit and the Bride say, "Come". And let him who hears say, "Come". And let him who is thirsty come. And whosoever will, let him take the Water of Life freely. For I bear witness unto every man who hears the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book; and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the Holy City, and from the things which are written in this book. He who bears witness to these things says, "Surely I come quickly". Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus." (Revelation 22:16-20)Consider also these words of Jesus:
"Then Jesus spoke again unto them, saying, "I am the Light of the World; he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of Life." The Pharisees therefore said unto Him, "You bear witness of yourself; your witness is not true." Jesus answered and said unto them, "Though I bear witness of Myself, yet My witness is true; for I know from where I came, and where I am going; but you cannot tell from where I came, or where I am going. You judge according to the flesh; I judge no man. And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent Me. It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. I am one who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me." Then they said unto Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesus answered, "You neither know Me, nor My Father; if you had known Me, you would have known My Father also." These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the Temple; and no man laid hands on Him; for His hour had not yet come." (John 8:12-20)
Faithful : from the Greek word pistos which means:"trustworthy, faithful, reliable" - and is similar to pistis which means "faith".
True : from the Greek word alethinos which means:"true (lit: made of truth), real, genuine."
Witness : from the Greek word martus which means:"a witness; an eye-witness or ear-witness" - and is similar to martureo which means "to bear witness, to testify". (Our word 'martyr' also is derived from this greek word.) Thus the title Faithful and True Witness refers to a person who 'was there' and can 'testify truthfully' as to what did, or will, happened in a situation; or what was said by someone; or what is true about something.
Consider also these words of Jesus:
"Jesus cried and said, "He who believes on Me, believes not on Me, but on Him who sent Me. And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. I am come a Light into the world, so that whoever believes on Me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hears My words, and believes not, I do not judge him; for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He who rejects Me, and receives not My words, has One who judges him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of Myself; but the Father who sent Me, He gave Me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that His commandment is Life Everlasting. whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto Me, so I speak. (John 12:44-50)
"These words spoke Jesus, and lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that Your Son may also glorify You; as You have given Him power over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is Life Eternal, that they might know You the Only True God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent. I have glorified You on the earth; and I have finished the work which You gave Me to do. And now, O Father, may you glorify Me with Your own self, with the glory which I had with You before the world existed. I have manifested Your Name unto the men who You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours, and You gave them to Me; and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever You have given Me are of You. For I have given them the words which You gave Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You, and they have believed that You did send Me."" (John 17:1-8)
"He who comes from above is above all; and he who is of the earth is earthly, and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all; and what He has seen and heard, that He bears witness; and no man receives His testimony. He who has received His testimony has set to his seal that God is true. For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure unto Him. The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand. He who believes on the Son has everlasting life..." (John 3:31-36)
"Pilate then went out unto them, and said, "What accusation do you bring against this Man?" They answered and said unto him, "If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered Him up unto you." Then Pilate said unto them, "you take Him, and judge Him according to your law." The Jews therefore said unto him, "It is not lawful for us to put any man to death;" so that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He spoke, signifying what kind of death He should die. Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "Do you say this thing of yourself, or did others tell you about Me?" Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You unto me; what have You done?" Jesus answered, "My Kingdom is not of this world; if My Kingdom were of this world, then My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but My Kingdom is not from here." Pilate therefore said unto Him, "Are You a King then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a King. To this end was I born, and for this cause I came into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears My voice." (John 18:29-37)
