Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, geologist and explorer of the Mississippi in the 1830s, married a granddaughter of Waub-O-Jeeg and delved into the story of the famous battle and the warrior who led it. He interviewed old chiefs who had taken part in the battle in their youth and found an old white-haired sister of Waub-O-Jeeg and middle-aged son who remembered details of his life. Valuable information also came from Waub-O-Jeeg's daughter, Ozhaguscodaywayquay, who became Schoolcraft's mother-in-law.
