During a visit by the President of IAEF to Hyderabad, India in December 2000, the Planning Committee of the District College Boys Hostel in Karimnagar, Andrapradesh made a passionate plea for monetary help for the construction of the hostel. The hostel was intended to house the underprivileged and poor college-going students. Some of them were orphans. The request was followed by the president's visit to the hostel site. It revealed that,
· The building was partially constructed. The second floor was on hold for lack of funds.
· The partially finished building was in bad shape and it was in dire need of repairs.
· There were nearly fifty poor students crowded in ten rooms and living in pitiable conditions.
· The roof was leaky and unsafe for human habitation.
· The completion of the building was roughly estimated to cost $40,000.
On his return to the US, the President submitted the request of the Hostel Committee to the IAEF Executive Committee at the meeting held on July 14, 2001. Although the Committee was sympathetic to the request, it felt that the financial condition of IAEF was not strong enough to fund the entire cost. However it acted favorably to donate $2,000 in installments of five toward the cost of a library because a library was more in line with the mission of the Organization. It also acted favorably to fund textbooks, furniture and possibly computers upon the completion of the library.
India today is going through an education revolution. It is trying to achieve 100% literacy by year 2020. In his last travel to India, the IAEF president found that literacy in remote villages is either absent or woefully lacking especially among the girls. Unless attempts are made to correct this anomaly, the goal of 100% literacy would be far from realization. The President shared this observation with the Executive Committee members at the July 14, 2001 meeting. The Committee felt that illiteracy is the root cause of ethnic, religious and social turmoil in the present day India. This is also partly ascribable to rising terrorism in India. In order to strengthen America-India friendship and more importantly to help achieve 100% literacy, the Committee was amenable to undertake the establishment of a girls' school on a long-term basis.
The library and the girls' school will be addressed under the project "Project-Education".
