Description: This course is for people who are interested in writing picture books, illustrating them, or both.  This weekend program begins at the Gell Center of the Finger Lakes with a Friday mixer followed by a slide show that features how I got involved in writing and illustrating picture books and demonstrating my working techniques.  Saturday morning will begin with a session that addresses the unique aspects of writing for children.  The next session will deal specifically with picture books--the different kinds, the roles of text and images, and the creation of story boards and dummies.  Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning will be devoted to the gentle art of critiquing.  After a discussion on how to set up a critique group, I will lead sessions where the students will read and critique each other's work.  The Sunday afternoon session will be devoted to the "nuts and bolts" of being a working author--researching submissions, submission procedures, dealing with rejections, contracts, agents, and taxes.
