| We stayed two days
in Monterey. What a beautiful
town. The weather was perfect. Sunny, breezy,
comfortably
warm. |
| A trip on the
Seventeen Mile Drive took us to Pebble
Beach. The scenery was lovely, but I probably wouldn't do it
again. This is a toll road ($8.50) through golf courses, including
pebble
beach. We were later able to find a real estate guide that showed some of the available houses there. My favorite was a bit over our budget at 27 million, but there were quite a few tolerable ones in the 6-7 million range. We decided that we didn't like the idea of gawking tourists, so probably will not buy. The drive is very nice, but not much nicer that the free highway, so unless you plan on taking golf course pictures to make the sons-in-law jealous, it can be missed. Note

The ocean breezes
sculpt the trees. The still
standing dead trees are called Ghost Trees. Very interesting
gray
shapes against the blue of the ocean and sky. |

| One of the fun
things for a kid of any age is the tidal
pools left when the tide goes out. There are all kinds of critters to be seen. We found quite a few with crabs, hermit crabs, anemones, mussels, and other strange things we couldn't identify. And, of course, the birds find it easy pickings. |

We stopped at one of the oldest missions, San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo .
a/k/a Carmel Mission, established by Father Junipero Serra in 1770.

| We ended the day
at Fort Ord. David had lived
here as a child, and we tried, unsuccessfully, to find his
house.
We found many similar ones, but not the exact one. The base
was
closed in 1991. The housing is now going to be made available
to
government and education employees. Row after row of barracks
are
closed and unused. We were surprised at the lack of graffiti
or
vandalism. It seems a shame to have so many good buildings
just
sitting there.unused. One
