History of Beallair

Beallair is one of seven homes associated with the Washington family  in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. George Corbin Washington, a grandnephew of George Washington, married Elizabeth Beall in 1807. Their son Lewis Washington took up residence at Beallair in 1840 and was living there as a gentleman farmer at the time of John Brown's Raid in 1859. Washington was the star witness in John Brown's trial. He later went to France in 1863 and in 1865 he returned to Beallair, where he died in 1871. The estate passed through several owners plus a stage of neglect, and was bought in 1980 by Mr. and Mrs. Don Kennard, who made many improvements. Beallair is in The National Register of Historic Places under its original spelling, Beall-Air.  In 2004 the Wormald Corporation purchased Beallair from the Kennards and begin developing the Beallair properties. The first homeowners moved in to Beallair in 2007.

On May 15, 2011 the Beallair community sponsored a very successful Historical Presentation.  Flyer for the Historical Presentation.
