Watonai:

Watonai of Kokusenya Kassen.  Watonai is the hero of "Kokusenya Kassen."   His father was Chinese, his mother Japanese.  With the objective of restoring his father's native country, the Ming Empire of China, Watonai visits Shishigajo Castle in China in an effort to form an alliance with General Kanki, the lord of the castle and the husband of his half-sister, Kinshojo.  Since Kanki was away from the castle, Watonai and Kinshojo devised signals whereby if Kanki agreed to join forces with him, she would float white face powder on a stream flowing out of the castle.  Should Kanki refuse, instead she would use beni (rouge of powderized safflower).  Watonai waits on a bridge over the stream, only to find that which comes down the stream is beni.  In the climax of the drama, known as Beni-nagashi (floating beni over water), the enraged Watonai powerfully stages violent action in an exaggerated manner.  Performing as Watonai is Kawarazaki Gonjuro, who later became Ichikawa Danjuro IX.  Background is Walnut burl.
