Tomamo-no Mae:

The susuki (eulalia, resembling pampas grass) of Nasuno (Nasu Plain) is widely known through its adoption in a famous legendary tale of Tamamo-no Mae.  A beautiful imperial court lady, Tamamo, dearly loved by Emperor Toba, was actually an incarnation of a golden-furred nine-tailed devil fox that came to Japan from across the sea.  Her assumption of a human form having been detected, she flew away to the far-off Nasu Plain and by exhaustively concentrating her witching powers, transformed herself into the Sesshoseki (Death Stone).  By emitting noxious vapor, this stone fatally poisoned many of the travelers, animals, or birds that passed nearby.  The tale has been dramatized frequently in kabuki.  Enacting Tamamo in this picture is Iwai Kumesaburo, who became Iwai Hanshiro VIII.
