Empire Dining Room Side Chair. Upstate New York, ca. 1835.NOT FOR SALE

The Empire period (1820-1840) represents the second part of the Neo-Classical style, and unlike the Federal period that preceeded it, shows a strong French influence. Mahogany continued to be the wood of choice often with tiger maple veneers. Crotch mahogany was also used. Empire furniture was heavy and massive, decorated with carvings of acanthus leaves, pineapples, and cornucopia. Table legs terminated in bear claw feet. Some of the more ornate hardware exhibited lions head brasses with ring pulls. Famous designers of the period include the Scottish immigrant Duncan Phyfe and the Frenchman Charles Honore Lannuier who brought with him the tradition of French Empire style and the technique of ormolu mounting
