Chimney Bluffs Park, north-east of Sodus, is an amazing sight. It looks like a piece of the Grand Canyon plunked down on the shore of Lake Ontario. If you follow this map toward the community of East Bay Park, you will pass the entrance on the way. While you are in the neighborhood, stop by El Rincon at 6974 Ridge Road in Sodus for some delicious and truly authentic Mexican food. Map The Genesee Country Village and Museum has a large collection of historic buildings that were rescued from destruction and reassembled here as a village. It sponsors classes and events throughout the season (closed in winter). It is also the regional home of vintage baseball, which is played with the outfits, manners and rules of 1866 (if you catch a ball after only one bounce, that is still an “out”). We haven’t been to one of these games ourselves, but they have been highly recommended. Map The Maple Tree Inn, in the southern tier, is open only from mid-February to mid-April each year, and they serve very little except buckwheat pancakes and maple syrup, but they certainly do a booming business. The attraction is maple syrup made right on the premises. It is far out in the country, but if you can get anywhere close, you will see signs directing you to the restaurant. There will probably be a long line of people standing outside in the cold to get seats, but the line moves pretty quickly. If you happen to arrive on Maple Weekend, you might find other related events in the area. Map The New York Museum of Transportation is at 6393 East River Road in Rush, and its sibling, the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum is a only couple of miles away in Industry. Both are open all year, Sundays only, from 11 am to 5 pm. Map (at bottom) The Sam Patch provides boat rides on the Erie Canal. A ride typically lasts for 90 minutes and includes a trip through one of the canal locks. Map Stokoe Farms is a working farm that with special events at Halloween and Christmas. We always cut our own Christmas tree there. With a straw fort, petting zoo, and lots of hot chocolate, kids are definitely welcome. Map Several other local farms have similar programs. | ||||
