IN MEMORIAM
Heine Baekkelund
March 13, 1971 - September 16, 2004

Heine Baekkelund studied Danish (minor) and history (major) at Odense University. He was generally in good health, except for his heart trouble which, I think, he'd had from birth. He had one sister and one brother, as far as I know, but I'm not 100% sure.

Heine was the author (with anna - his girl friend) of a children's book "pelle ands lykkelige dag" (pelle the duck's happy day).

He started out playing with toy soldiers, like so many of us graduated to board games and ended up in fantasy miniature games. He pretty soon tired of those and started playing historical miniatures games. At first he was interested in the late Romans, but everybody was doing those at that time, so he settled on the Byzantines (on the grounds that you can't get more late Roman than that). Once he learned more about things Byzantine, he developed an appreciation of the flexibility of the organization, an interest in the various emperors (in particular, Belisarius) and had recently visited Istanbul, which he loved and was planning to re-visit.

All in all, he was a much laid back guy, who only occasionally got upset, and only if things truly mattered to him. The type of guy who was habitually late for appointments, but somehow you didn't really mind it, if you get the idea.

Byzantium – Beyond the Golden Gate
(From the Foreword)

Heine Baekkelund, the principal author of this work, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday 16th September 2004, he was 33 years old.

He left a partner, Anna, his family and many friends.

About a month before, he had handed over a revised manuscript to me for the final editing and was going to concentrate on finishing off a significant amount of painting of miniatures for the colour section.

When I learnt of his death I have to say such matters such as editing and painting became somewhat insignificant.

However Heine had great passion for his subject, and it became a matter of striving to the best of our ability to make this Warhammer Ancient Battles supplement the best we could, and a fitting memory to him.
