Who Are We?
The Vincent House is a private residence that provides comfort focused care to people who are nearing the end of a terminal illness. The Vincent House is located behind St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wayland and was formerly the convent for the nuns that served the parish. There are two resident rooms, 2 sitting rooms, a sun porch ,kitchen and shared bath on the first floor. Upstairs are offices, family bedrooms, bathroom facilities and another sun porch. Residents and their families can enjoy a porch and gazebo in the back yard. The Vincent House accepted its first resident in December of 2000. Through December of 2004 Vincent House has served 75 residents from Avoca, Dansville, Arkport, Wayland, Springwater, Canaseraga, Hornell and other towns in the area.
Vincent House residents become hospice patients of Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care and Dr. Joe DePra. Residents receive care that is equivalent to that which they might receive in their own homes. Volunteers, working 4 hour shifts, under the supervision of our Volunteer Coordinator, Judy Culbertson and House Director meet daily care needs. The House Director is Leath DeRitter, who is a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care nurse and social worker.
Families
are welcome to stay overnight in one of our 3 family bedrooms. Families are
encouraged to visit as often as they would like and to contribute to the provision
of care as they are able. We hope families will enjoy their roles as family
members rather than as primary caregivers.
The Vincent House provides care to anyone who is in need and whose needs can
be met by the capabilities of the house and its volunteer staff. We rely on
individual donations, our annual gift campaign, fund raising events and grants
to support our ability to continue to provide care to terminally ill persons
in our community. We are always seeking new volunteers for ongoing projects,
such as resident care, fundraising and maintenance and seasonal ventures like
gardening and decorating. Vincent House staff members are available to speak
to local groups about the house, end of life care, grief and bereavement.
