The Book Review

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

What can I say about The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams. After reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy I've become hooked on the series. Sometimes it seems that sequel books are a let-down on the whole series, not true with this book.

This book takes up right where the last one left off. Arthur, Ford, Zaphod, Trillion, and Marvin the robot are back aboard the Heart of Gold. The Vogons are hot on their trial and the computer seems to be busy collaborating with the drink synthesizer on tea. Then as the Vogons start firing on them Zaphod holds a seance and calls up his great-grandfather to help them out. Well, Zaphod Beeblebrox the Fourth is more interested in dressing-down his great-grandson and friends.

Fortunately for our heroes, they are not destroyed by the Vogons. Instead they find themselves at The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, the only place where you can enjoy a good meal while watching the universe end and have your dinner recommend itself to you.

This book served to remind me how much I like Douglas Adams. The names and customs of alien races along with the entries from the guide itself are some of the most enjoyable parts of the books for me. I look forward to reading the rest of the series and highly recommend these light-hearted books to people of all ages.
