A Bio of Something Retarded Through the Senses of Langel

In March of 1997 a band named Warmth played Open Mic Night at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, Mich. That night a plastered Justin Brewer and Mike Blank approached me with the idea of a 'side-project'. I said great, but I had no idea what I was getting into.

Blank, three years ahead of me (graduated both from Onsted), was a long time aquantance (we ran Cross Country together when I was a freshman). Justin, whose solo tape I had heard months before, was a completely knew person in my small world of people. Our first practice consisted of my bass, Blank's sax and Justin on bongos, coronet & accordian. Suffice to say it was something to be desired. Our second jam session went a bit smoother, and by our third (the first we ever botherred to record) we could finally decide we had something.

"What should we call ourselves?" asked either I or Justin.
Blank replied with, "I don't know, but it should be something retarded."

And so there you have it, the story behind the name. Now I think it was late April or early May when Aron was invited to jam with us. That was another step in the right direction. Now complete chaos was achievable, tell me if that's a good thing. Jam session after improv session we jammed the most twisted music we could muster and I must say there were times I was laughing so hard I could hardly play.

Everything about this 'project' this 'idea' this 'entity' confuses the hell out of me. Everything we do is improv or a reproduction thereof. A lot of the time I can't believe what's going on, but I except it.
