Positive Mitzvah # 2:
The Unity of YHVH:
D'varim (Deuteronomy) 6:4
Shma Yisra'el YHVH Eloheynu YHVH Echad.
Hear O Yisra'el, YHVH is our Elohey, YHVH is One
![]()
This is the beginning of the Shema.
The first one is Shema: This means to listen with attention and with the intention to obey. We are to listen to YHVH and obey Him.
YHVH – He is the Eternal One. He is the One Who was, is, and always will be. (Hayah Hoveh v’Yihyeh).
YHVH Eloheynu – He is our Elohim. He may not necessarily recognized universally, but nonetheless, He is OUR Elohim.
(Micah 4.5)
For all people will walk every one in the name of his elohim, and we will walk
in the name of YHVH our Elohim for ever and ever.
YHVH Echad – One day He will be recognized by all nations, as the ONE AND ONLY! (Aruch Hashulchan 61.4)
In the Hebrew text, the letters ayin (
)
and dalet (
)
are larger than the others. These two letters form the word ‘ed (
),
meaning witness. The shema bears witness to YHVH’s unity and declares it to
all nations.
Tehillim/Psalms 67:3-4(2-3)
That Your way may be known upon earth, your salvation (
y'shu'ah) among all nations. Let
the people You, O Elohim; let all the people praise You
Mark 12:29-32
Yeshua answered, "The most important is, ‘Sh'ma Israel, Adonai Eloheynu
Adonai echad [Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one],and you
are to love Adonai your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
with all your understanding and with all your strength." The second is this:
‘You are to love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other mitzvah
greater than these." The Torah-teacher said to him, "Well said, Rabbi;
you speak the truth when you say that he is one, and that there is no other
besides him;
This is the most important mitzvah, This is the Sh'ma.
