To destroy idols
Abed te'abdun et-kol-hamekomot asher avdu-sham hagoyim asher atem yorshim
otam et-Eloheyhem al-heharim haramim ve'al-hageva'ot vetachat kol-ets
ra'anan.
Destroy, you shall destroy all the places in which
the nations that you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains,
and on the hills, and under every green tree:
YHVH does not want His people to worship idols. He wants us to remove them from our presence and totally destroy them. We are commanded to destroy all those places where idols are worshiped. He wants us to be holy. Therefore, special efforts must be made to clear it of idol worship entirely.
Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (Rambam) specifically states that this mitzvah only applies to the Eretz Yisra'el. However, there is a principle here for all believers. The fact is that we should not have any trace of idolatry in our homes.
Devarim (Deuteronomy) 7:5
But thus shall you deal with them: you
shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and hew down
their Asherim, and burn their engraved images with fire.
The Torah gives us specific ways of destroying each type of idol. First the altars must be broken down. Pillars must be smashed into pieces. The Asherim (tree idols) must be cut down. And finally, graven images must be burned with fire.
Devarim (Deuteronomy) 7:26
You shall not bring an abomination into
your house, and become a korban like it: you shall utterly detest it, and
you shall utterly abhor it; for it is korban.
Korban means that something is dedicated to be utterly destroyed. If we allow it into our house, it will be bring destruction into our homes. Even if you don't actually worship the item, it must be destroyed. This includes souveniers in our homes that have any association with idols.
This mitzvah repeats the word "abed" which means destroy. Rashi wrote concerning this, "Destroy and afterward, you shall destroy. From here we see regarding one who eradicates idolatry, that he must pull of the roots after it.' Not only should we destroy the idols, but also any roots after it. This could refer to any spiritual impact that the idol has had on us must be uprooted as well.
