Negative Mitzvah 65
Do not destroy places of worship or holy books

Devarim/Deuteronomy 12:4
Lo ta'asun ken l'YHVH Eloheychem.
You shall not do so to YHVH your Elohey.

We must look at the context of this mitzvah:

Abed te'abdun et-kol-hamekomot asher avdu-sham hagoyim asher atem yorshim otam et-Eloheyhem al-heharim haramim ve'al-hageva'ot vetachat kol-ets ra'anan.
" You shall surely destroy all the places in which the nations that you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains, and on the hills, and under every green tree:
Venitatstem et-mizbechotam veshibartem et-matsevotam va'ashereyhem tisrefun ba'esh ufsiley eloheyhem tegade'un ve'ibadetem et-shmam min-hamakom hahu.
and you shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and burn their Asherim with fire; and you shall cut down the engraved images of their elohim; and you shall destroy their name out of that place.
Lo ta'asun ken l'YHVH Eloheychem.
You shall not do so to YHVH your Elohey." (Devarim/Deuteronomy 12:2-4)

"And you shall tear down their altars... and destroy their names... [but] do not do so [to the L-rd your G-d]"-this is a prohibition to erase the Name of G-d [from any writing] or remove a stone from the altar or from the courtyard (Talmud, Makkot 22a)

Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi) quoted Rabbi Ishma'el: " Would it enter your mind that a Jew would tear down the altars of G-d? Rather, [the meaning of 'You shall not do so' is that] you should not do like the deeds of the nations so that your sins would cause the sanctuary of your fathers to be destroyed"

Later on in perek (chapter) 12, we see:

Take heed to yourself that you not be ensnared to follow them, after that they are destroyed from before you; and that you not inquire after their gods, saying, How do these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. You shall not do so to YHVH your Elohey: for every abomination to YHVH, which he hates, have they done to their elohim; for even their sons and their daughters do they burn in the fire to their elohim. (p'sukim/verses 30,31)

Vayikra/Leviticus 20:23
You shall not walk in the customs of the nation, which I am casting out before you: for they did all these things, and therefore I abhorred them.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17
Don't you know that you people are God's temple and that Ruach Elohim lives in you? So if anyone destroys Elohim's temple, Elohim will destroy him. For Elohim's temple is holy, and you yourselves are that temple.

This is how we join the interpretations of Makkot 22a and Rashi. We are His temple, and we destroy or defile it by living in the way the world does.

Romans 12:2
In other words, do not let yourselves be conformed to the standards of the 'olam hazeh (this world). Instead, keep letting yourselves be transformed by the renewing of your minds; so that you will know what God wants and will agree that what he wants is good, satisfying and able to succeed.

1 Corinthians 6:18-20
Run from sexual immorality! Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the fornicator sins against his own body. Or don't you know that your body is a temple for the Ruach HaKodesh who lives inside you, whom you received from Elohim? The fact is, you don't belong to yourselves; for you were bought at a price. So use your bodies to glorify Elohim.

Tzefaniyah 3:4 Her prophets are arrogant and treacherous people. Her kohanim have defiled the sanctuary. They have done violated the Torah.

The Sanctuary is defiled by violation of Torah. The Hebrew word for violate is omx (chamas). It has the meaning of acting violently toward something.

Makkot 22a refers to the prohibition of damaging or erasing a holy book. In a way, our actions can do damage to YHVH's torah For example, we read in the introduction to Chofetz Chaim: A Lesson A Day, " Lashon hora [evil speaking] is so powerful, in fact, that it can erase the merits of a lifetime of Torah learning and mitzvah observance." Our sinful actions can erase what we learn from the Torah.

Mark 4:15
Those alongside the path where the word is sown are people who no sooner hear it than the Adversary comes and takes away the word sown in them.
