613 Mitzvot
Negative Mitzvah 47
Not to follow one's heart of eyes,
straying to impurity
Bamidbar 15:39
Vehayah lachem letsitsit ur’item oto uzechartem et-kol-mitzvot YHVH va’asitem otam velo-taturu acharey levavchem ve’acharey eyneychem asher-atem zonim achareyhem.
This shall be tzizit for you, and when you see it, you will remember all the commandments of YHVH to perform them, and you shall not explore after your hearts and after your eyes after which you are going be unfaithful.
Our hearts and eyes are bound to wander from the mitzvot of YHVH. This is why He set up reminders, such as the tzitzit. We NEED to be reminded not to explore after our own hearts, because YHVH knows our hearts!
Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 17:9-10
The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it? I YHVH search the heart, test the intermost part, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.
Matthew 15:19
For out of the heart come forth wicked thoughts, murder, adultery and other kinds of sexual immorality, theft, lies, slanders.
In addition, our hearts are stubborn and want to go our own way instead of Elohim's way.
Romans 8:7
because the mind of the flesh is hostile towards YHVH; for it is not subject to YHVH’s Torah, neither indeed can it be.
Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 9:14
but have walked after the stubbornness of their own heart, and after the Ba‘alim, which their fathers taught them;
Ba'alim are lords and masters. Once we go after our heart, it becomes our master. We are enslaved by the lusts of our hearts.
James 1:14-15
Rather, each person is being tempted whenever he is being dragged off and enticed by the bait of his own desire. Then, having conceived, the desire gives birth to sin; and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.
We are trapped by the desires of our heart, once we start giving into its bait. Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki) said, "The eyes sees, then the heart covets, then the body sins."
1 Yochanan/John 2:15-17
Do not love the Olam Hazeh (This present Age), neither the things in the Olam Hazeh. If anyone loves the Olam Hazeh, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the Olam Hazeh, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride in the prominence of what one has in this life, one’s vital possessions, all this is not of the Father but is of the Olam Hazeh. And the Olam Hazeh is passing away and the lust of it, but the one doing the will of YHVH has his permanent dwelling place to remain for ever.
Proverbs 28:26 ¶ One who trusts in himself is a fool; But one who walks in wisdom, he is kept safe.
Instead of following after our hearts, we need to walk in His wisdom. That wisdom is His Torah.
Romans 8:4-6
so that the just requirement of the Torah might be fulfilled in us who do not run our lives according to what our old nature wants but according to what the Spirit wants. For those who identify with their old nature set their minds on the things of the old nature, but those who identify with the Ruach Elohim (Spirit of Elohim) set their minds on the things of the Ruach Elohim. Having one’s mind controlled by the old nature is death, but having one’s mind controlled by the Spirit is life and shalom.
Therefore, we need to let our minds and hearts be controlled by Ruach HaKodesh instead of our own hearts.
