613 Mitzvot
Negative Mitzvah 31
Not to practice divination
The Hebrew word for divination is
kasam. The Talmud defines kasam as one who takes his rod in
his hand and says as though to consult it, "Shall I go, or shall I not
go?" (Talmud Bavli Sanhedrin 65b) It means to use some type of object to
foretell the future. This may involve tapping a stick to produce a meditative
state so that the diviner can predict the future. (Avodat Kokavim 11:6). Others
have said it is peeling one side of a stick and letting it fall gto see what
side it falls (Sefer Mitzvoth Gadol, Negative 52; Paaneach Razah). Another method
of kasam that is described is grabbing a stick and measuring off to
the end with one's figures and calling out positive and negative responses for
each time the finger moves down (Chizzkuni).
Tarot cards would be prohibited by this mitzvah. Other practices include palm reading, fortune cookie messages, rolling of dice, throwing of "magic" sticks. There is a toy called a "Magic Eight Ball. The user askes a question and shakes it and an answer like "YES" or "IT IS POSSIBLE" would appear through a little window. This is a form of kasam divination.
Yehoshua (Joshua) 13.22
Bil’am (Balaam) also the son of Be’or, the diviner
(kasam), did the children of Yisra’el kill with the sword among
the rest of their slain.
The Moabites had hired Bil'am to curse Yisra'el, but YHVH would not let him curse Yisra'el, but was only able to bless them (Bamidbar/Numbers 22-24). In Sefer Yehoshua he is called a kasam, a diviner. In today's society, he would be called a psychic.
Bamidbar (Numbers) 24:1
When Bil’am saw that it pleased YHVH to bless Yisra’el, he didn’t
go, as at the other times, to meet with enchantments,
but he set his face toward the wilderness.
We see that Bil'am normally used enchantment (nachash - observing omens) in his so called "Prophesies."
Yechezkel (Ezekiel) 22:28
Her prophets have daubed for them with whitewash, seeing false visions, and
divining lies to them, saying, Thus says Adonai YHVH,
when the YHVH has not spoken.
Messages by kasam are nothing but lies, even if they claim to be from YHVH. The truth is that YHVH has not spoken, but rather it comes from Gehinna (Hell).
Micah 3:11
The heads judge for reward, and the priests teach for hire, and
the prophets divine (kasam) for money:
yet will they lean upon YHVH, and say, Is not YHVH among us? none evil can come
upon us.
Again this describes Bil'am: "Oy to them! Because they walked in the way of Kayin and to the Error of Bil'am, they surrendered for gain, and in the rebellion of Korach they were destroyed!" (Yehudah/Jude 11).
Acts 16:16-19
It happened, as we were going to prayer, that a certain girl having
a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain
by fortune telling. Following Sha’ul and us, she cried out, "These men are servants
of the El ‘Elyon, who proclaim to us the way of salvation!" She was doing this
for many days. But Sha’ul, becoming greatly annoyed, turned and said to the
spirit, "I charge you in the name of Yeshua the Messiah to come out of her!"
It came out that very hour. But when her masters saw that the hope of their
gain was gone, they seized Sha’ul and Sila, and dragged them into the marketplace
before the rulers.”
This passage reveals that the source of divination is a demonic spirit.
