613 Mitzvot
Negative Mitzvot 15
Not to divert anyone to idolatry
Shemot (Exodus) 23:13
Uvechol asher-amarti aleychem, tishameru; veshem elohim acherim lo tazkiru, lo yishama al-picha.
And in all that I have said to you, take head, and make no mention of the name
of other elohim, nor let it be heard from your mouth.
This mitzvah teaches that this is a prohibition against
diverting others to false elohim by speaking their names. Even if we have no
intention of worshipping the idols themselves, we should be careful about speaking
about them. By doing so, it may peak someone's interest and get them to find
out more about them. This would result in that person's violation of Negative
Mitzvah 24, Not to inquire into idolatry. Making mention of their name also
include discussion about the characteristics and teachings associated with these
elohim. But I would take it even further: The Hebrew word for don't mention
is
zakar. Its basic meaning is to recall to mind, remember. So therefore, we shouldn't
even think of the names of other elohim.
Yehoshua (Joshua) 23:7
that you not come among these nations, these that remain among you; neither
make mention (
zakar) of the name of their elohim, nor cause to swear [by them], neither serve
them, nor bow down yourselves to them;
Hoshea 2:17
For I will take away the names of ba'alim out of her mouth, and they shall no
more be remembered (
zakar) by their name.
Ba'alim are supreme male divinities of the Phoenicians or Canaanites.
Zakharyah (Zechariah) 13:2
It will come to pass in that day, says the LORD of Armies, that I will cut off
the names of the idols out of the land, and they will no more be remembered
(
zakar); and also I will cause the prophets and the spirit of impurity to pass
out of the land.
It is the desire of YHVH that their names will not even be remembered.
Ephesians 5:11-12
Have nothing to do with the deeds produced by darkness, but instead expose them, for it is shameful even to speak of the things these people do in secret.
This pasuk (verse) has to any sinfufl deed, but it can also apply to idoltrous practices. Often there are secret rituals associated with idols.
Tehillim (Psalms) 16:4
Their sorrows shall be multiplied who give gifts to another elohim. Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer, Nor take their names on my lips.
Here the word is nasa, which means to carry, or lift up. By discussing them, we are lifting or exalting them in some manner.
The person who disobeys this mitzvah is called a madiach.
