Not to inquire into idolatry
Vayikra/Leviticus 19:4
Al-tifnu el-ha’elilim ve’elohey masechah lo ta’asu lachem ani YHVH Eloheychem.
Don't begin to turn toward to look at idols and produce cast image elohim for yourself: I am YHVH your Elohim.
The usual Hebrew word used for "turn" is shuvah. But here we see the word panah. Therefore, it is not just a matter of converting (shuvah) to idols, but not even to face (panah) an idol. We should not even turn our face (panim) in the direction of an idol. This implies that we should not turn our thoughts toward an idol, not even to study a religious system simply for the purposes of proving it to be false.
People from the Treasury Department do not studying counterfeit money. They diligently study the real money, so that they will recognize that it is the real thing.
1 Yochanan/John 5:19-21
And we know that we are of Yahweh, and the whole world lies in wickedness. And we know that the Son of Yahweh is come, and has given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Yeshua the Messiah. This is the true Elohim, and eternal life. Little children, keep away from idols.
1 Corinthians 10:14
Therefore, my dear friends, run from idolatry!
We must know the One who is true in order to keep away from idols, even to run from it! Even honest curiosity can be a dangerous thing, because it can lead us into other things.
2 Corinthians 6:16-17
And what agreement has the temple of Yahweh with idols? for you are the temple of the living Elohim; as Yahweh hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their Elohim, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from among them, and be separate, says Yahweh, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
Rabbi Shlomo Yitskhaki (Rashi) said, "At first, they will be just 'idols'; but if you turn to them, you will end up making them 'gods.'" Once we start looking into them, we make them gods, even if we do not physically manufacture them.
