This 2-4-2 sat out in front of Carbon Limestone at Hillsville, Ohio. Originally a Porter 0-4-0T as CLS #31. CLS bought it second hand from a neighboring company when they changed to trucks. CLS used 38" gauge. The previous owners didn't like RR equipment so they gave it to the B & O Station Resturant in Youngstown, Ohio. Now lettered B & O #6 it sits near downtown Youngstown, Ohio. The following information was given to me by Frank Vollhardt. Many thanks to him for the info. The pictures were taken in 1971 or 72

Photo's by Reggie Arford

July/August 1999

The following five pictures were taken by Reggie Arford in Youngstown Ohio of the same #6 as in the pictures above. Only it's about 27 years later and a different paint job. Reggie got a nice shot of the running gear under the cab confirming that the leading and trailing wheels are just attached for show. The tender was made from one of the quarry cars and is non-functional. Reggie also confirmed that the gauge is 38 inches.

I took these pictures sometime in 1971 or 72. The Plymouths belonged to a mine equipment sales company just east of Carbon Limestone near Hillsville, Pa. They sit on the property of Ambrosia Coal. Thanks goes to Frank Vollhardt for this info.

GE45TON 1

GE45TON 2

These pictures were taken in 1977 in Olean, NY. The unit is a GE 45 tonner. When I took the picture a person that was there told me that the locomotive had come from the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville. Supposedly it was L. A.&L's first engine.

GE45TON 1

These three pictures were taken in 1970 in Tonawanda, NY at the "American Standard Products - Tonawnda Iron Division. They are of a Whitcomb 65 tonner #3. The third picture is of their GE 45 tonner #1. This facility primarily generated pig iron from scrap. It was torn down in the late 1970's. Information supplied by Mark Landgraf. Updated 1/17/2000

GE45 2

The following pictures were taken near Leroy, NY at a limestone quarry. It is located on the old Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh RR line into Rochester, NY. The first two were taken in 1977 when the B & O still owned the line into Rochester. They used this 65 tonner to move hopper cars under the crusher. Both this engine and the yellow one have been long gone from the property. The third picture was taken in 1972 at the same limestone plant near Leroy, NY.The engine is a GE 45 tonner on display.

SHOVEL 1

This picture made from two is of the way they used to mine the limestone before large diesel powered shovels and quarry trucks took over. The steam shovel, I believe is one of two or three that were used to dig the Pannama Canal. When the cannal was finished the steam shovel was brought back to the US. This is the only serviving one that I know of. It's in poor condition due to sitting in the elements all these years. I will update this info as I find out more about this piece of equipment. The small steamer is a three foot gauge saddle tanker. It has a, what I would call, quarry car behind it. This engine is in sad shape. As of July 16,1999 the small steam engine is gone along with the little quarry car. Looks like I'll need to track down what happened to the engine and car These pictures were taken in mid year of 1977 with a 126 Kodak Instamatic.

Note Update: I have gotten info that the engine and car were donated by the quarry in 1996 to the Central N.Y. Chapter, NRHS museum in Central Square, N.Y. Both have been restored. Hopefuly I will get some pictures to display.
