I run my coil using the ground of the outlet and it works fine but you could be taking your life or someone else's life in your hands if you use a plug and the outlet is wired wrong. Check the outlet first and make sure it is wired properly.

These outlet checkers run about $5. Pretty good insurance when your playing with almost 2KW of deadly power.
