Followers of the Way

By Fr. John

Over the last couple of weeks, I have been asked questions about the H1N1 flu virus and our liturgical practices. The general principle that we are following regarding the H1N1 flu are the guidelines established by USCCB (United States Catholic Conference of Bishops) and the Diocese of Rochester. These guidelines deserve repeating as a way to help all of us work together to stay healthy as a faith community.

  • If any parishioner or assigned minister is sick or feeling ill, please stay home from Mass and other church activities until you are better. If you are a minister assigned for a particular Mass please notify beforehand the Parish Office.

  • All Ministers of Communion are asked to wash hands thoroughly before Mass and to use, after the Sign of Peace, the antibacterial hand wipe that is provided for you before distributing Holy Communion.

  • If any one is not feeling up-to-par, please choose to receive only the Eucharistic Bread. Intinction by the faithful, dipping the Eucharistic Bread in the Precious Blood, is not allowed. Those who choose not to receive from the Chalice can be assured that they celebrate the fullness of Jesus Christ in the Consecrated Bread.

  • During this particular flu season if you are uncomfortable shaking someone’s hand or holding hands in prayer, simply turn towards that person and offer a word of peace and a slight bow of reverence.

  • Above all we are encouraged to use our common sense and to practice the rules of good hygiene.

During this time of heightened awareness regarding the cold and flu season, I encourage all to pray that the flu will not cause serious illness to our parish family.

In closing, I express my gratitude to David Steklenski for sharing with us our second "pulpit chat" about our Capital Campaign, "Joining Together to Secure Our Future."

Again, I ask kindly that we take the opportunity to review the Campaign materials, ask whatever questions that need clarification, pray for the Campaign success, and make a commitment to this parish-wide Campaign. Every gift is a gift that builds on our past and strengthens our future as a welcoming and faith-filled community. We are a parish united in faith, confident in hope, and sincere in our love.

I pray that our Heavenly Father continues to bless the work of our hands and hearts as we strengthen the bonds of community now and for the future.

Have a peaceful week and remember God is with you each step of the way.

Campaign Prayer

Compassionate and loving God, You have been generous to us and have blessed us abundantly. You continue to be generous in sharing Your gifts with us. Help us now to prepare and provide for the future. May our gifts be pleasing and acceptable to You. May we look to our future united in faith, confident in hope and sincere in our love.
We ask this through Jesus our Lord.

Amen.

Parish Sharing

$329.23 went to Catholic Charities Community Services.

St. Charles Holiday Food Baskets will be this weekend’s Parish Sharing recipient.

One of the corporal works of mercy is to comfort the imprisoned. This may be more difficult for us than some of the other ways to practice mercy. Parish sharing has supported a few organizations that work in this realm. Next weekend, we will donate to the Monroe County Jail Ministry that is run by the Diocese of Rochester. Our contribution will buy religious materials given to/used by the prisoners through that ministry.

Thank you letters are posted on the bulletin board at the back of church.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION CORNER (PHONE: 663-8000)

CHILDREN’S LITURGY

On Sunday, November 1, the 9:30 Mass will be a Children’s Liturgy. On this feast of All Saints, we honor all the men and women, young and old, from all walks of life, who showed us how to love God and other people. We too are called to be saints in the kingdom of God. All are welcome!

FIRST RECONCILIATION

On Sunday, November 1, the second meeting will take place for parents and children who are preparing for sacramental Reconciliation. This will be held in the school at 10:45 a.m. (after the 9:30 Mass). Children should bring their books and photos. At this time, they will work on a special project to be used at the celebration of Reconciliation on November 17. If you have any questions, please call the Christian Formation office.

REMINDER - PARISH TOWN HALL MEETING

Tuesday, October 20 - 7:00 PM - Church

This Tuesday, October 20, St. Charles will host a "Town Hall" meeting to discuss the proposed Pastoral Plan for the six parishes of the Eastern Greece/Charlotte planning group. Once finalized, this plan will be submitted to Bishop Clark. Copies of the proposed plan are available in the Parish Office or on our website. All parishioners are welcome & encouraged to attend.

Joining Together to Secure Our Future

This weekend is the second of three weekends in which we are formally talking about the Capital Campaign, "Joining Together To Secure Our Future". During last weekend’s Masses, Steve Eckert and Mike Maher shared with you the reasons and goals of the campaign and how the participation and support of each parishioner is essential for its success. This weekend, Dave Steklenski will speak about the guidelines for giving, address important questions & answers and acquaint you with how to achieve recognition on the Tree of Life that will be located on the south wall near the statue of St. Joseph.

Finally, Commitment Weekend will take place next weekend, October 24 and 25. At that time, each parish family will have an opportunity to make their pledge commitment during Mass to show their support for this campaign. We are grateful for the momentum provided by the pledges that we have already received, amounting to $204,000 with an average gift of $3,500. There are still significant funds we need to raise to meet the financial challenge of our campaign. We are confident in the positive response of our great faith community and pray for the success of our campaign, "Joining Together To Secure Our Future".

A slide show that graphically illustrates some of the renovations to be undertaken during this 5-year plan will be available for your viewing after all Masses.

With Flu Season Approaching…

With the advent of flu season, it is important that we work together to limit the spread of the disease. Here are some things you can do:

  • Consider getting vaccinated against the flu.

  • Follow rules of good hygiene, especially washing your hands often.

  • If you are ill, stay home until you are better.

Our parish will follow the directions of the diocese and the USCCB regarding liturgical practice. We ill follow the direction of the County Health Department with regard to any community practices. All events and workshop services will go forth as scheduled. The Parish staff and the Diocesan Pastoral Center is in touch with local health departments and other officials and will monitor the situation closely.

Please pray for the health of our community and especially for those whom you know are ill.

Mass of Remembrance - Sunday, November 1, 11:30 Mass

Each year we have a Mass of Remembrance for all those from our parish who have died during the past year. This year we will dedicate the 11:30 Mass on Sunday, November 1 (All Saints Day) as this year’s Mass of Remembrance. The names of those who have died will be listed in the weekend bulletin for November 1.

We realize that many of you may have lost a relative during this past year (November 2008 through October 2009) whose funeral was celebrated elsewhere. We would be happy to include their name in the published list. If you would like their name included, please fill out the form in the bulletin and return it to the Parish Office no later than October 26. All are invited to come and remember their loved ones who now live in eternal joy.

Are You Thinking About the Catholic Faith?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and Children is a process where we can experience the Catholic Faith Community. It is an opportunity for questions to be answered, sharing with others who find themselves asking similar questions and for learning about the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. Are you:

  • A person who has not been baptized and would like to learn more about the Catholic faith with the possibility of becoming Catholic?

  • A baptized Christian of another denomination who would like to learn more about and possibly join the Catholic church?

  • A baptized Roman Catholic who has never received Eucharist or Confirmation and would like to become a full participant in the life of the Church?

  • A child over the age of 7 who has never been baptized or has been baptized in another Christian denomination or has been baptized Catholic and has never received Catholic instruction?

The Christian Initiation process offers an environment of support and guidance as you discover how God is working in your life. Is this process for you? Do you have a friend or neighbor who may be interested? Please call Sr. Miriam at 663-3230 for more information.

Food Shelf

The goal of the St. Charles Food Collection Ministry is to provide emergency food to parishioners and community members who are in need. Can you help by donating a few non-perishable items? The most useful items are those that go together: peanut butter & jelly, pasta & sauce, cake & frosting, soup & crackers, cereal, oatmeal, granola bares, juice. There is also a special need of paper products (tissues, toilet paper, paper towels) Items may be brought to Church and placed under the St. Joseph Statue. Thank you for your generosity.

Hospital Visitation

New patient privacy rules went into effect at all health care institutions nationwide. As a result, hospitals are no longer able to give out names of patients over the phone. In addition, patients may choose to be listed or not listed in the hospital patient directory. If they choose not to, hospitals are not permitted to disclose these names to anyone.

These new changes will make visiting our parishioners in the hospital a little more challenging but not impossible. However, we need your help. In the future, if you would like a member of the pastoral staff to visit with you or your loved one in the hospital please inform us either before or during your/their stay. Call the rectory at 663-3230 and we will notify the pastoral staff. Thank You.

Organ and Tissue Donation

We all recognize the life-giving benefits of organ and tissue donation. Take a moment to discuss organ and tissue donation with your family since they are the ones who will follow through on your wishes upon your death. For more information, call 1-800-950-7818.

Funerals

In the event of a funeral, our daily mass schedule is subject to change. Should this situation arise, every effort will be made to reschedule the mass intention in as timely a manner as possible.

The Centering Prayer Group

The Columbus Day holiday was a chance for some members of the Centering Prayer Group to spend the day at the Abbey of the Genesee in Piffard. It was a time of refreshment. We brought walking shoes and walked along the Genesee Greenway, making some detours off the trail to walk through a row of golden cornstalks in a vast field of corn. It was a very peaceful time, listening to the sound of the cornstalks rustling against our sleeves as we walked, and hearing the songs of many varieties of birds who visited the trees in hues of yellows, golds, and some intense reds. We attended two prayer services at the Abbey and in between services we had time for quiet and private centering, and for visiting the bread shop for our supply of delicious fresh bread. After Vespers, a trip to nearby Geneseo for dinner became a time to celebrate the blessings of the day.

I would encourage you to take a drive to the Abbey this fall for your spiritual refreshment, for praying the psalms with the monks, walking on the colorful Greenway, and browsing through the bookstore and bread shop.

The next Centering Prayer Group meets on Thursday, October 29 at the school from 7:30-9:00 p.m.

Facilitator is Lorrain VanCour.
