Prayer Center Building Status

In November 2007, the Parish Council approved the recommendation of the Finance Committee to close the Borromeo Prayer Center. Since that time, a committee consisting of representatives from Parish Council, Finance Committee, Buildings and Grounds Committee, and Parish Staff has been meeting to work out a plan to accommodate Parish groups currently meeting in the Prayer Center and to examine alternatives for the structure.

Meeting Rooms for Parish Groups

All of the Parish groups of the Prayer Center will be accommodated with space either in the School or in the Parish Office. All of the issues surrounding these uses will be worked out prior to the Prayer Center’s closing on July 1.

Structure Alternatives

The committee has explored several possibilities for the future of the old convent building. Commercial real estate agents were contacted and met with the group to look at sale or lease possibilities. Representatives of Sheen Housing also toured the facility. In both cases, it was determined that the expense required to repair existing problems and bring the building up to current codes would be prohibitive. In addition, obtaining the required permits from the Town of Greece and the loss of parking spaces would make any alternative use difficult for the Parish. Leaving the building empty with the utilities turned off or minimized could lead to problems with vandalism, etc. Furthermore, deterioration from lack of maintenance would be a major safety consideration and we would still have to pay for hazard and liability insurance on the empty building.

These and other considerations have led the committee to investigate the steps necessary to remove the building through demolition. This would save the Parish growing utility and insurance costs. Also, the space where the building currently stands could be used for additional parking. A required step in this process is an assessment of the amount and kinds of asbestos-containing materials in the building. A contract for the asbestos assessment has been signed and the assessment will start shortly.

Decisions such as those needed in the case of the Prayer Center building are very difficult to make as we all have deep, personal investments in our Parish. The committee working on this matter has carefully considered a variety of options and is convinced that the course detailed above is in the very best interest of the Parish.

Stewardship Prayer

My church is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is.

It will be friendly, if I am.

Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.

It will do great work, if I work.

It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver.

It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship,
if I invite and bring them.

It will be a church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith,
and a church with a noble spirit,
if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things.

Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself
to the task of being all the things that I want my church to be.

Amen

If not us, who? If not here, where? If not now, when? If not for the Kingdom, why?

Parish Sharing

$218.00 went to Journey Home.

Mercy Bridges will be this weekend’s Parish Sharing recipient.

During the month of May, a special month for the Blessed Mother, our tithing emphasis will be on mothers and children. Mercy Residential Services (MRS) will be the recipient of next weekend's parish sharing. This ministry of the Sisters of Mercy provides a continuum of quality residential programs and support services to pregnant and parenting women and their children. The program offers transitional housing and life skills education in a nurturing environment. A holistic approach is used to empower women in their development of healthy relationships and self-sufficiency.

Melita House provides a 'refuge' during pregnancy and until the newborn is three months old. Families First helps mothers under the age of 18 and their children prepare for living independently in the community. McAuley Housing has five supported apartments where young mothers and their children can live on their own. Emergency Housing is temporary shelter for homeless pregnant or parenting young women and their children.

MRS has been around for 27 years, and in their last fiscal year they served 91 women and 75 children through their programs.

FIRST EUCHARIST TO BE CELEBRATED MAY 3 AND 4

At the January Mass of Enrollment, over 60 children expressed their desire to begin the preparation process for First Eucharist. They came before the assembly and asked for prayers and support as they continued on their faith journey. With the help of their parents and families, they have been learning what the Eucharist is about and what it means to be a member of a Eucharistic community. Next weekend, these children will be coming to the Table of the Lord for the first time at the 4:30, 9:30, and 11:30 Masses. Once again, we can offer them the witness of our prayer and faith. Please welcome them and let them know that they are valued members of our parish community. It is truly a time of joy for them and for us, as we are all touched by sacramental celebrations. They remind us that we are members of the Body of Christ and that we share in this sacred meal.

Mass Intentions

Beginning next Monday, May 5, at 9:00 a.m., requests will be taken during regular office hours for Mass Intentions for July 1 - December 31, 2008. Due to the abundance of requests, the number of Masses for an individual is limited to two per year.

Are You Thinking About the Catholic Faith?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and Children is a process where we can experience the Catholic Faith Community. It is an opportunity for questions to be answered, sharing with others who find themselves asking similar questions and for learning about the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. Are you:

  • A person who has not been baptized and would like to learn more about the Catholic faith with the possibility of becoming Catholic?

  • A baptized Christian of another denomination who would like to learn more about and possibly join the Catholic church?

  • A baptized Roman Catholic who has never received Eucharist or Confirmation and would like to become a full participant in the life of the Church?

  • A child over the age of 7 who has never been baptized or has been baptized in another Christian denomination or has been baptized Catholic and has never received Catholic instruction?

The Christian Initiation process offers an environment of support and guidance as you discover how God is working in your life. Is this process for you? Do you have a friend or neighbor who may be interested? Please call Sr. Miriam at 663-3230 for more information.

RCIA

Common questions of adults thinking about becoming full members of the Catholic Church:

What is RCIA?

Answer: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a journey that consists of learning about the Catholic Church through instruction and group faith sharing, participation in rites/blessings and reception of the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. Groups usually meet once per week from Sept-May. Depending on the amount of faith formation a person has had, the journey length could differ.

Can I still become a full member even though I haven't had any formal religious education training in years?

Answer: Yes, people start the RCIA journey with different experience and faith formation backgrounds.

What if I was baptized in a Protestant faith and want to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church?

Answer: All faith backgrounds are welcome to learn more about the Catholic Church. You will not be baptized a second time if the church you were baptized in baptized "in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit".

RCIC

Questions regarding RCIC - the journey children take toward full initiation:

My school age child was never baptized as an infant; can he/she still become a full member now?

Answer: Yes, the Church welcomes children who desire to become Catholic. The RCIC journey leads toward the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.

My child is school age. How old does a child have to be to participate in RCIC?

Answer: Children who are approximately age 7 or older prepare for Baptism by participating in the RCIC.

What will my child learn in the RCIC process?

Answer: During the journey your child will learn about God, Jesus, the Bible, the Sacraments and the teachings of the Catholic Church.

If you are interested in learning more about becoming a full member of the Catholic Church call Sr. Miriam at 663-3230.

Food Shelf

The goal of the St. Charles Food Collection Ministry is to provide emergency food to parishioners and community members who are in need. Can you help by donating a few non-perishable items? The most useful items are those that go together: peanut butter & jelly, pasta & sauce, cake & frosting, soup & crackers, cereal, oatmeal, granola bares, juice. There is also a special need of paper products (tissues, toilet paper, paper towels) Items may be brought to Church and placed under the St. Joseph Statue. Thank you for your generosity.

Hospital Visitation

New patient privacy rules went into effect at all health care institutions nationwide. As a result, hospitals are no longer able to give out names of patients over the phone. In addition, patients may choose to be listed or not listed in the hospital patient directory. If they choose not to, hospitals are not permitted to disclose these names to anyone.

These new changes will make visiting our parishioners in the hospital a little more challenging but not impossible. However, we need your help. In the future, if you would like a member of the pastoral staff to visit with you or your loved one in the hospital please inform us either before or during your/their stay. Call the rectory at 663-3230 and we will notify the pastoral staff. Thank You.
