Come
on out and make a difference!
Local Skaters and Planning Committee Members Sport The New Sign At the request of a newly
formed group of volunteers, Clay County Parks and Recreation met on June 1st and
voted in favor of providing space for Clay County's own Skate Park.
The park will provide 8000 square feet of skate friendly environment and
will be housed inside the Clay County Park in Maysel.
The park will be free and open to the
public during daylight hours.
Becoming a skilled skater takes a lot of practice and requires a lot of energy. Skating is an activity that is both physically and mentally challenging which can lead to a healthier lifestyle among young people. Studies show that childhood obesity is at epidemic levels in the United States. In an effort to create a recreational environment that will encourage the youth of Clay County to become active, the goal of having our own skate park began.
One might ask, "Why
does Clay County need a skate park?" Skateboarding is a sport that has
grown since it's inception in the early 80's. Businesses and city sidewalks
don't usually welcome skaters due to the possible liability.
Many erect signs barring the sport on their properties.
The youth of Clay County have been asked to vacate several business
locations. There are signs in Clay
County that state "No Skating" allowed.
With this thought in mind, creating an environment that welcomes the
sport is imperative. Our goal is to
create an environment that is safe from traffic hazards and is available for
public use.
Events are being
planned to meet the fundraising goals of nearly $100,000.
While the group is applying for grants, this group of volunteers is ready
to roll up their sleeves and work hard to do what needs to be done for the
benefit of Clay County's youth. Clay
County's youth deserve to have their own skate park. Some of the events in the
works are Professional Skateboarding Demonstration, Concert, Pool Party, Teen
Dance Party, Car Washes, Bucket Brigades, and a live auction. Dates will be
announced as they are available.
Many have voiced their
support for the Skate Park including the Clay County Health Department, Clay
County Board of Education, County Commissioners, Clay County Parks and
Recreation, Clay County Bank, Delta Communications and several private citizens.
WV Public Broadcasting has shown interest in filming some of our progress
for a documentary they are working on.
