We live on a hobby farm in Foreston, Minnesota. Foreston is approximately 80 miles north of
Minneapolis/St. Paul and 30 miles east of St. Cloud. When we were discussing getting a dog, we looked at many
breeds. After determining what we
wanted in a dog, it was very clear that the only breed for us was the
Newfoundland. We have had newfs since
1993 and have seven years of breeding experience. Our females are bred only once a year. We believe that more than that is too hard on the female. The newfs are part of our family and puppies
are born and raised in our home. They
are very well socialized. We have
puppies across the United States (California, Oregon, Wyoming, Montana, Alaska,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Texas, New York, New Jersey & Florida) and in Canada.
Where do Newfs come from? As legend would have it, Newfs first
appeared on the North American continent aboard a Viking Ship in 1000AD with
Norse explorer, Leif Erickson. Legend
says he had a black “bear dog” named Oolam as a trusty mate. Legends aside, the Newfoundland breed as we
know it, originated in the easternmost Canadian providence of
Newfoundland. They are a working dog;
bred for swimming & pulling. Newfs
were part of the “work force”. They were
on the fishing ships and used to pull-in nets, retrieve nets (or fishermen!)
from the water, and on land pull the cart of fish back to the village. In the winter, teams of Newfs were used to
pull lumber.
Characteristics of the Breed:

Before you add a newf to your home there are some very
important things to now about:
Newfies shed & drool.
No one likes an untrained dog!!!!
Large breed dogs are prone to hip
dysplasia.
Newfoundlands are subject to
cystinuria & heart murmurs (SAS).
Our dogs are cystinuria clear and do not have heart
murmurs. Also, our dogs come from a
long line of OFA certified dogs. As for
the shedding and drooling, well, you have to expect to have that when you get a
newf!!! As part of our buyer’s
contract, each puppy comes with a one-year health guarantee and you agree to
participate in formal obedience training with your puppy.
You can find several excellent newfie books available on
