Sloan Color Schemes

These are the famous Mason colour
schemes developed by Robert Sloan in the
1980s. Robert is highly respected
for his work into all things narrow
gauge and for a long time the following
colour schemes were the best Mason
Bogie colour information
available. These colour schemes were based on
some significant research into
gray scale mapping. This method is
considered a viable way of determining
possible colour schemes in the
absence of any other specfic colour
info. There are always unknowns with
this system, particularly how different
the grey scale of 1870s
photographic plates were as compared
to B&W plates and photos of the 20th
century.
Given the more recent research into
Mason colours, with samples shown in
this site, it is now believed these
colour schemes are not correct.
The Mason colour schemes are now
believed to have been green, blue and
lake. It is possible that
Robert's analysis of photographic plates that
inferred a colour was red or brown,
might have infact been shades of green
or blue.
We show these colours schemes out
of respect for Robert and his outstanding
contribution. They also represent
part of the Mason story. In years to
come, more data is likely to be
found that will point us all in yet another
direction. This is one of
the true delights in modelling and researching
antique locomotives!
