The Eastern Lake Ontario Dune System offers many opportunities for hikers, birdwatchers, canoeists, and kayakers. Walkovers and viewing platforms have been built to protect the fragile dune environment. Sandy Creek, NY is located in northern Oswego County with Lake Ontario on the western border and the Tug Hill Plateau on the east. Located between the city of Syracuse to our south and Watertown to our north, Sandy Creek enjoys the advantages of rural living with the educational and cultural opportunities of nearby metropolitan areas.

Sandy Island Beach State Park is Oswego County’s newest family attraction with natural sand dunes, sparkling blue water and a warm stretch of beach. The park is located off State Route 3 on County Route 15 in Sandy Creek, NY between North and South Ponds. It is part of the Eastern Lake Ontario Dune and Wetland Area, a seventeen-mile stretch of shoreline, which extends from the Town of Richland, north along Lake Ontario to Jefferson County. The dunes were formed by wind and wave motion of a giant inland sea that preceded Lake Ontario. Sandy Creek, NY's Sandy Pond area is part of the only significant freshwater dune site in the northeastern United States.
