The town of Sandy Creek, NY is rich in
history, which covers 202 years. The earliest settlers came to Sandy Creek in 1803,
residents took part in the War of 1812, Sandy Creek can boast the “Big Cheese” sent to
President Andrew Jackson in 1835, the Oswego County Fair which is entering its
147th year, twin villages (Sandy Creek and Lacona) and as stated by a visitor
who stayed here because of a snow storm in the early nineteenth century, “the
friendliest people live here.”
The
Eastern Lake Ontario Dune System offers many opportunities for hikers,
birdwatchers, canoeists, and kayakers. Walkovers and viewing platforms have been
built to protect the fragile dune environment. Sandy Creek, NY is located in
northern Oswego County with Lake Ontario on the western border and the Tug Hill
Plateau on the east. Located between the city of Syracuse to our south and
Watertown to our north, Sandy Creek enjoys the advantages of rural living with the
educational and cultural opportunities of nearby metropolitan areas.
Sandy Island Beach State Park is Oswego County’s newest family attraction with
natural sand dunes, sparkling blue water and a warm stretch of beach. The park
is located off State Route 3 on County Route 15 in Sandy Creek, NY between North and
South Ponds. It is part of the Eastern Lake Ontario Dune and Wetland Area, a
seventeen-mile stretch of shoreline, which extends from the Town of Richland,
north along Lake Ontario to Jefferson County. The dunes were formed by wind and
wave motion of a giant inland sea that preceded Lake Ontario. Sandy Creek, NY's Sandy Pond area is part of the
only significant freshwater dune site in the northeastern United States.
