Tampons
What's in that tampon you're using?
What You Don't Know Could Hurt You!

Tampons, Dioxin, and Endometriosis
Click here to see the data of the Playtex tampons I had tested for dioxin.

If you don't know what a tampon is then check out Wikipedia's definition.

So you've heard the news that your tampons, pads, and diapers may contain dioxin, and your wondering "so where can I get alternatives that are safe?" Well, I have compiled a list that will help you in finding the alternative that best suits you.  Be aware that I do not sell these products, nor am I affiliated with any sites that do. I would also like to clarify that I am not the person responsible for the asbestos in tampons e-mail hoax. I believe that may have started by a college student in Colorado. But I did contribute to helping clear up the rumor, by supplying info to David Emery of Urban Legends and Folklore http://urbanlegends.miningco.com.

I have been accused by some people of creating fear and powerlessness by my website. I believe that fear is a basic and instinctive survival technique. You all have a choice. You can feel powerless, or you can get involved and do something about it. You can blindly take the word of the manufacturers or you can question the validity of their information. I had nothing to gain or lose when I decided to make this website. The manufacturers on the other hand have much to lose. Especially if it is proven that they have known about these dangers all along. To sum it up: asbestos in tampons is a hoax. Dioxin in tampons is not.

When I started my website, one of my goals was to help get the word out about dioxin and endometriosis. Make them a household word, so to speak. Most people don't have any clue what dioxin, endometriosis, fibromyalgia, or Hidradenitis Suppurativa is, or what dioxin is capable of doing. I firmly believe that dioxin is a contributing factor to endometriosis. Since there was already organizations working on the "big picture" and the "big fish". I chose to take a different angle. My thoughts were that since there are so many women in the world with endo (5 1/2 million in the USA and Canada, and millions more worldwide), and since dioxin has been proven to cause endo. Why not try to educate these women and get them involved in the bigger picture.

I do not believe that tampons alone are what is causing endo, etc. However, one of my points has always been that if these products were not manufactured in the process that they are, they would not be contributing to the environmental dioxin burden. Dioxin can cause problems at very low levels. It may not cause cancer(at low levels), but it can and does disrupt hormones and causes other illnesses at very low levels. There is NO SAFE LEVEL of dioxin.

Women today have many options to choose from. Organically grown cotton that has not been bleached with a chlorine method is, in my opinion, the best choice. Many women are also asking about the Tampax Naturals tampons. Are they really dioxin free? In my opinion, no they are not. Why? Well, for one they are not made of organic cotton. Cotton that is not grown organically contains many toxins because of the pesticides and herbicides that are used. Also, the process that Tampax uses to bleach these tampons is called Elemental Chlorine Free. This is a very misleading term. Elemental Chlorine Free paper products are papers bleached with chlorine dioxide instead of chlorine gas. These chemicals still contain chlorine, so this process still produces dioxins!!!

I urge everyone who is interested to research this topic thoroughly. A good book to start with would be "Our Stolen Future" by Dr. Theo Colborn. This book will give you a good history and understanding about dioxin. You should also keep in mind that: "The full story of dioxin is a complex one, and includes cover-ups, lies, and deceit; data manipulation by corporations and government; and fraudulent claims and faked studies. Survey of Chemical Substances in Paper Handkerchiefs and Toilet Paper - PDF document

It's often quoted: "Sanitary products are used by half the population roughly one week a month for roughly 38 years. At five tampons a day for five days, that works out to 11,400 tampons over a lifetime."

But, what if the calculation is not correct? I've often wondered exactly where did these figures come from?
(Actually, I have a very good idea of where these figures came from... ;-0....and it wasn't very scientific...lol..;-O...)
If we should be following the recommendation of changing these products every 4 hours, and the average of days was actually higher than 5 days, our life time exposure would be higher. And, aren't we also told that woman today are menstruating earlier and longer?
(SEE - Girls Menstruating Earlier Racial Gap Between Black and White Girls Persists)

So, 5 days by 6 tampons a day, 12 months a year for 38 years = 13,680
Now, let's say women actually use these products for more than 5 days out of a month (7 days) = 19,152. Also let's extend the years out to 40...7 days, 6 tampons a day, 12 months, 40 years = 20,160

Help us find out...Please take my mini poll.

Also do not forget to take the Tampon Survey. Thanks!

Below are a few excerpts from the FDA's reply on tampons and asbestos.
I am also including a few comments of my own.

FDA - "The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has worked with wood pulp producers to promote use of dioxin-free methods because dioxin is an environmental pollutant. Because of decades of pollution, dioxin can be found in the air, water and ground. Therefore, while the methods used for manufacturing tampons today are considered to be dioxin-free processes, traces of dioxin may still be present in the cotton or wood pulp raw materials used to make tampons. Thus, there may be trace amounts of dioxin present from environmental sources in cotton, rayon, or rayon/cotton tampons."
Ruth's Comment: What the EPA fails to point out, is that the "decades of pollution" and the "dioxin present from environmental sources" was caused, in part, by these same wood pulp producers and paper and feminine hygiene manufacturers. Dioxin does not naturally occur in nature. It's a man made waste.
Please visit this site regarding Dioxin paying attention to the "History of Dioxin".

Consumerlawpage - Industry's "True Lies"
Subsequent studies have proven the "combustion theory" claims to be more public relations myth than scientific fact. Measurements of dioxin in lake sediments show that dioxin levels dramatically increased after 1940, (Czuczwa, 1984, 1985, 1986) when chemical companies such as Dow began to make products contaminated with dioxin. Other studies reveal that prehistoric humans, who burned wood for fuel, did not have significant quantities of dioxin in their bodies. Tissues from 2,000-year-old Chilean Indian mummies did not have dioxin (Ligon, 1989). EPA states in its reassessment that dioxin can be formed through natural combustion sources, but this contribution to levels in the environment "probably is insignificant".

FDA - "Manufacturers have provided FDA with test results of studies conducted at independent laboratories, using the most sensitive test methods available. Dioxin monitoring is a highly technical assay performed at only a few independent expert laboratories in the U.S. The detectable limit of this assay is currently approximately 0.1 to 1 parts per trillion of dioxin. Using these tests, dioxin levels in the rayon raw materials for tampons are reported to be at or below the detectable limit of the state-of-the-art dioxin assay, i.e., approximately 0.1 to 1 parts per trillion."
Ruth's Comment: The Playtex tampons I had tested contained between .6 to .7 picograms of dioxin. These tampons were tested using a modified version of USEPA method 1613.

FDA "A part per trillion is about the same as one teaspoon in a lake fifteen feet deep and a mile square."
Ruth's Comment: I love that comment! They try to make it sound as if one teaspoon in a lake fifteen feet deep and a mile square is not that much. The scary thing is, that parts per trillion can and do have very scary affects. To learn more about parts per trillion and the affects, please follow the links below.

"Yet another factor hindering market growth is that the number of menstruating women is expected to decline over time. "Baby boomers are now gradually entering a menopausal stage. As a result, the high growth rates associated with menstruating women from that age group is likely to decline over time," says the analyst. "Additionally, the negative publicity surrounding hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is also likely to reduce the number of menstruating women."

Tampax's Strategy To Answer Safety Rumors - P&G Corporate Communications Case Study
(this link has recently been taken down.....? Good thing I kept a copy....;-) http://205.197.9.203/tampax.htm
P&G States:"O
ur original response on the bleaching-dioxin issue stated that "the process used to bleach or purify the cotton and rayon we use in TAMPAX does not form any detectable dioxin. The use of the word "detectable" is confusing to people unfamiliar with technical jargon".
Ruth's Comment: Gee, I don't find the word detectable confusing
. Do you?
Websters dictionary states: Detect:
1. to discover or catch (a person) in the performance of some act: to detect someone cheating.
2 . to find out the true character or activity of: to detect a spy.
3. to discover the presence, existence, or fact of: to detect the odor of gas.

Ruth: It is often claimed that chlorine dioxide methods of bleaching (otherwise known at Elemental Chlorine Free) do not create any "detectable" levels of dioxin. But what many fail to point out is that the tests they are doing cannot detect all levels of dioxin. That's why "theoretically" they can say that the products are dioxin free because they cannot detect them with the test that is used. When I originally started researching and was looking for a place to have my tampons tested. I was told by the companies that do the testing that there were two methods of testing. (There are actually more methods, but just the two mentioned are/were used) The first method was 8290 and if memory serves correctly only could detect to the PPM or PPB level. (This is supposedly the test method that the manufacturers were using when I started this journey.) Method 1613 (which is the method I used to test mine) can detect to the PPT level. Which I believe is the standard method that is used today.

From some peoples stand point, the issue of dioxin in these products, may now be a moot point. But from mine, it's not. To say that something can't be detected just because the test that is used is unable to detect all levels, sounds absurd to me. Especially since the FDA and other organizations state that there is no acceptable level of dioxin. Plus another point I try to make is what about all the toxins that are released into the environment before the finished product is even produced? There are and have been totally chlorine free processes that could be used that would not release any dioxin. (Minus of course any level of dioxin that is in the raw materials due to environmental levels of dioxins). You have to keep in mind that now a days even organically grown produce is going to have some level of dioxin because it (dioxin) has pretty much traveled the world over and contaminated everything.

DIOXIN FALLOUT IN THE GREAT LAKES
Scroll down to "Pulp and Paper" The dioxin-free alternative technologies: In recent years the mills have increasingly replaced some or all of the elemental chlorine with chlorine dioxide, which is also an effective bleaching agent. In comparison with elemental chlorine, chlorine dioxide forms much less dioxin and other chlorinated organic compounds; but, despite industry claims, the amount formed is not zero. Pulp and paper manufactured in this way is called "elemental chlorine-free" (ECF). Totally chlorine-free (TCF) pulp and paper products, which are produced dioxin-free, can be achieved by using non-chlorine bleaching agents such as hydrogen peroxide.

DESTROYING ENVIRONMENTALISTS BY "ECO-TERROR"
"Your right to peaceful protest may be yet another casualty of the "war on terrorism" if an economic loss of more than $10,000 can be claimed as a result of your action. The bill contains increased sentencing for all levels of violation and an expanded definition of types of businesses defined as "plant enterprises," including stores that sell "plant products" (i.e. paper or wood). Under this extremely broad definition, blocking access to an office supply store, or "conspiring" to limit profitability of paper products, could be considered "agro-terrorism" if the loss of revenue met the law's threshold. Many in the anti-environmental movement go even further and routinely call ANY environmental activist an "Eco-terrorist," arguing on the basis of guilt-by-association (or worse, guilt-by-faint-condemnation). The term has been tossed around for years in wise use circles, loosely used to describe virtually any activity (or activist) they don't agree with. "

What’s in That Tampon? Don’t Look for Answers on the Internet By Mary Jane Minkin

Mary Jane Minkin writes:
"The next leap of faith is that not only are tampons loaded with dioxins but that dioxins produce endometriosis. So, how did this rumor get started? Well, there is a woman whose name is Ruth. Now, Ruth doesn’t use her last name so I don’t what Ruth’s last name is. But, she has gotten on the Internet and then some TV stations picked this up from the Internet, and Ruth goes on and tells the dramatic story of her sufferings from endometriosis and she blames tampons. That is where this big rumor got its scientific basis. Anyway, Ruth will tell you it is from tampons and it is from the dioxins in tampons that have given her endometriosis. There is no association between endometriosis and tampon use, period, let alone the dioxins in the tampons. But again, you get it on the Internet—this stuff gets publicized without any significant truth behind it whatsoever."
Ruth's Comment: "LEAP OF FAITH"?! I'd say a big leap of faith is the paper and pulp producers, diaper and sanitary products manufacturers, etc. telling us to trust them that their data proves that these products do or do not contain dioxin. It's been admitted that these products used to contain dioxin. But they don't want to show us how much they used to contain........and now we're supposed to believe them that the 'new' processes that they use does not produce dioxin. And, if there is no acceptable level of dioxin then why are they only testing for PPT levels? There is also PPQ.........Am I to believe that this lower level does not matter? And what about the levels of toxins that are released into the environment by these so called dioxin free methods of production? I'm not just against the finished product. I believe we need to look at the entire process. Wisconsin has many papermills that not only produce the finished products but also are creating the pulp for the finished products. I grew up swimming, fishing, etc. by some of these mills.....

Mary Jane, states: "Ruth will tell you it is from tampons and it is from the dioxins in tampons that have given her endometriosis." Please tell me where you and I communicated this. Or for that matter where I have ever stated that. Mary Jane also states "There is no association between endometriosis and tampon use, period, let alone the dioxins in the tampons." Would you please quote your sources on this claim? Have you been privy to information that proves this statement? And since this article was published September 20, 2000, I would expect your data to be dated prior to then.

(By the way... I did e-mail the author and the above website years ago.... And I never got a reply.) hmmmm ;-)

Mary Jane also states: "But again, you get it on the Internet—this stuff gets publicized without any significant truth behind it whatsoever." I agree with you Mary Jane! Right back at you! Please just the facts!

By the way, my site is titled "Ruth's Page Endometriosis and Dioxin".
NOT Endometriosis and Tampons.

Again, I have never stated that my endometriosis was caused by my tampons.
Plus, I really don't think that I can take credit for being the first person to bring up the theory
that dioxin may have something to do with endometriosis.
People were discussing the dioxin issues long before I ever got involved.

ScienceBlog.com - Sunlight converts common anti-bacterial agent to dioxin. (Triclosan & Chlorine)

Ruth: One thing that I have noticed over the years, is that it's usually the opposition who tries to say that I (or we...) are stating that tampons cause endometriosis. When I started this research journey, my goal was to learn about the disease that I had developed. When I started reading reports that dioxin may be a factor in causing endo and that there may be dioxin in tampons, etc., I felt I needed to "know". I also felt that I would not and was not getting the full story from the manufacturers. So I had my tampons tested. And of course just like my instincts told me, there was dioxin in the products that I was using.

But I also wondered, where is all this dioxin that's in the environment coming from in the first place? And if the products contained between 0.2 parts per trillion to 10 parts per trillion, at a time that the manufacturers were saying that levels were going down due to the elemental chlorine free processes. Then how much had they contained before, during the years that I was growing up before they switched processes? Why do the manufacturers insist on keeping their data secret? Shouldn't they be required by law to divulge this information? Proprietary information my bass! They're withholding data that could prove useful to the medical community and the people that suffer from unexplained diseases. They try to pooh pooh the matter by saying that humans ingest more dioxin via their food supply than what they are exposed to by these products. I concur! But, again where do you think the dioxin that is in the food chain came from?

Now the manufacturers are apparently using genetically modified and genetically engineered cotton in these products. In my opinion any product should be required by law to be labeled with the ingredients that are used in its production. Whether I'm eating a can of beans or using a tampon I feel we should have the right to know what is in these products. If tampons are considered medical devices, then why, in some countries are they taxed like luxury items ? Because pads are not worn internally they are not considered medical devices. But considering that the vagina is the most absorbent part on a women's body, shouldn't pads and diapers also be considered medical devices? People tend to focus on the dioxin in tampons issue, but what about dioxin in diapers? What levels of toxins are our children being exposed to for the first years of their life when we diaper them in conventionally produced products? What levels of toxins did these products contain in years past and what affect has this had on children's development? The only way to really know what is in your products is to buy organic.

This next link is an abstract of a study that was done on the Exposure Assessment to Dioxins from the Use of Tampons and Diapers

It states: "The refined exposure analysis indicates that exposures to dioxins from tampons are approximately 13,000-240,000 times less than dietary exposures. The refined exposure analysis showed that exposure to dioxins from the diet is more than 30,000-2,200,000 times the exposure through diapers in nursing infants."
Ruth: I don't have a copy of the complete study yet, so I do not know what calculations or statistics they used. But again, where do you think the dioxin in our food has come from? And if they used the calculation mentioned above, how do we know that the figures are correct? ( 5 tampons a day for 38 years).

Still more timely evidence exists. In "Exposure Assessment to Dioxins From the Use of Tampons and Diapers," authors noted that while Dioxin exposure through tampons and diapers does not significantly contribute to Dioxin exposures in the United States, their assessment of four brands of tampons and four brands of infant diapers obtained from commercial establishments in San Francisco, California revealed that Dioxins "were present at detectable concentrations in all samples."

I would like to thank Michael DeVito and Arnold Schecter for doing this study. They are trying to find the truth. Some may say that this study proves that I am wrong and that there are no dangers from these products. But I see it as one study that has shown what the current levels of dioxin are in these products, and a hypothesis of a comparison between dioxin exposure in these products and exposure to dioxin via the food supply. Again, where do you think the dioxin in the environment came from, what were the levels before the manufacturers started changing their processes, and what affects may these levels have caused?
Also what's going on with this genetically modified cotton issue?
We still need more tests! Keep going guys! You are appreciated. :-)
