The HS Awareness Month Resolution
What is Hidradenitis Suppurativa?
Hidradenitis Suppurativa ( HS ), is a recurrent skin disease usually found
in inverse areas and around hair follicles where apocrine sweat glands are
located. It is characterized by boil-like lesions or abscesses on the groin,
buttocks, thighs, scalp, neck, nipples, penis, vagina, scrotum, and armpits,
with subsequent scarring and chronic seepage. HS was first described by Leper
and Velpeau in 1839,
and the French surgeon Verneuil
was the first to associate HS with the sweat glands.
Clinical Staging
Stage I - Isolated abscess formation, single or multiple, without sinus tracts
or scarring.
Stage II - Recurrent abscess with tract formation and cicatrization; single
or multiple widely separated lesions.
Stage III - Diffuse or nearly diffuse involvement or multiple interconnected
tracts and abscesses across an entire area.
When looking at pictures of HS please keep in mind that
many of the pics online are severe or stage 3. Not everyone progresses to
stage 3.
And it is possible to go from stage 3 or 2 to stage 2 or 1.
Recent conservative estimations indicate the prevalence
of HS ranges from 0.1% to 3%, and possibly higher.
That is roughly 400,000 to 12 Million affected by HS in the USA alone, and
many of these people have not been properly diagnosed yet.

Hidradenitis suppurativa has been related to an inflammatory
arthritis that
can cause inflammation of many joints (See Psoriatic
Arthritis see also "Psoriatic
arthritis belongs to a group of diseases, which are referred to collectively
as the spondyloarthropathies (SpA)." Hidradenitis suppurativa has
also been related to a rare disease that can be associated with joint inflammation
(arthritis) called Behcet's
disease.
Ruth: I also have Tinea
versicolor (another Tinea
link) and skin tags.
Inverse
psoriasis is also called flexural psoriasis.
This is not HS, but in my opinion you could have both at the same time...
Just something else to be aware of...
Do you need to speak with someone
immediately regarding HS? Then please call the HS-USA Hotline at 928-279-0833

I think the EMedicine site has some good info. But they also, in my
opinion, have some incorrect information.
One being the following: "Hidradenitis suppurativa does not present
prior to puberty because the apocrine glands are inactive until triggered
by a surge in sex hormones. The condition may be observed in patients of any
age after puberty."
Ruth: I had HS lesions long before I hit puberty.

Also some sites and doctors will tell you that being over weight causes this
disease. While I do believe that if you are over weight your symptoms may
lessen if you lose weight. I do not believe that being over weight is the
cause or trigger for this disease. Although I may be slightly over weight
now, I've also had flare ups when I was not over weight. In my case, I feel
that my weight problem has been caused by my inability to move due to my illnesses.

Silver
Colloids - Publications
While I have never tried colloidal silver, I have not heard
anything positive regarding using it for Hidradenitis Suppurativa. Most HS
suffers that I have heard from say colloidal silver is a waste of money. The
only time that I have heard or read that silver was good for infections was
when it was used topically not taken orally or ingested. There are bandages
that have silver in them. It is not safe at all (in my opinion) to ingest
or take orally any silver solution including Colloidal Silver.

Everyday
objects could spread MRSA. - 13th September 2005
Everyday objects used frequently in hospitals such as pens,
patient notes and computer keyboards could be helping the spread of the MRSA
superbug, an expert has warned. Dr Wilson said: "Once the organism is stuck
on to something, unless it is cleaned, it is there for 80 days - that is how
long it can survive. Other tests carried out by UCLH using a contaminated
glove found that if someone had MRSA on their hands, the bacteria would be
left on the following four surfaces touched.

- Increasingly virulent Staph infections. - 26-Sep-2005
Although all three children were previously healthy, the infection caused
severe sepsis, rapid clinical deterioration and bleeding into the adrenal
glands, a complication, known as Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome, that is
usually associated with fulminant bacterial meningitis. Two of the three bacterial
strains were resistant to standard antibiotics. In all three cases, the disease
progressed so rapidly that neither standard nor alternative antibiotics had
an effect. "These bacteria have picked up genes that enable them to evade
most of the drugs we used to employ to treat them," Daum said, "and now they
are combining that with genes for various toxins that can cause severe illness."
