Sharmans of Brooklyn
Edward James Sharman and his wife Alison /
DALE / emigrated to the United States in 1882, settling in downtown Brooklyn.
Edward had been trained as a Tailor in
Scotland and opened a Tailor Shop when first settling in Brooklyn. Several
years later
he opened a Tea and Coffee store at 581
Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y. As his children grew older, he opened a new store
for each one of them and then went beyond the
number of his children having a total of 11 stores at its peak. The last,
which
was also the original store closed upon my
grandfather's (Albert Sharman) death in December of 1955.
Except for sons Edward and William, who
were born in England, the other children were born in Brooklyn, most likely at
581 Myrtle Avenue along with some of his
grandchildren.
William went West in 1900, worked in North
Dakota, met his wife, Janet L. Blair in Harvey, North Dakota then worked his
way north to the Province of Alberta,
Canada. After a time he built a general store in a newly established town of
Parkland,
Alberta Canada. He "Homesteaded" outside of
Parkland. William's brother Edward also went to Canada for a short time.
William and Edward married sisters, Janet L
and Jean Hall Blair who were both born in Glasgow, Scotland.
George Sharman, brother of William and
Edward went to Canada for a visit, had been involved in a family problem,
(might
have been with his father) left Canada
following a traveling circus and was never heard from again.
Oldest son Edward Richard also went west for
a time, married Janet L. Blairs sister Jean Hall Blair. They came back to
Brooklyn and then settled in New Jersey.
Albert Sharman had run one of the stores
for a short time, married Lillian Burgess, worked selling insurance then finally
back
managing the last store that remained open
till his death in December of 1955.
Margaret married Godfrey Knight, divorced in
the 1940's and remained in Brooklyn. She must have moved in with Uncle Fred
in the Philadelphia area as I remember going
to her funeral in the late 1950's and staying at Sumners house.
Fredrick married Marion and had one son,
Sumner. Marion was killed in an Automobile accident. Fred remarried in the
1950's to Helen, lived in New Jersey and was
in the insurance business all his life.
Albert and Lillians son Albert James and
family were the only remaining Sharmans in Brooklyn in the late 1950's
Edward James and Alison Dale Sharman are interned at Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York
